Job Description

About the Role:Reporting to the Camp Director, the Waterfront Instructors primary focus is to enforce the safety of all campers and staff while on or around the water by implementing a set of rules and regulations for campers and staff. While also working directly with campers, providing support, supervision and ensuring that campers are receiving a high-quality camping experience. Waterfront Instructors will actively and enthusiastically assist in leading all camp programs and participate actively in all aspects of camp life. Waterfront Instructors will instruct and lead waterfront sessions to assigned group of campers and supervise all waterfront activities including swimming lessons, and general swim. In addition to supporting all waterfront related risk management protocols and procedures.Responsibilities:

  • Maintain supervision and leadership of assigned campers for the duration of the camp.
  • Assist campers in meeting daily and personal needs.
  • Attend all staff training.
  • Attend all camp sessions on time and participate actively in all aspects of camp life.
  • Attend, assist, and act as a positive role model during all blood glucose monitoring and insulin sessions.
  • Know the program schedule before arriving at camp and be prepared to run all assigned activities and perform other related duties.
  • Be organized and prepared for all camp sessions, arriving five minutes prior to the commencement of each activity in designated program area.
  • Arrive one day prior to camp to ensure equipment is safe and ready for use.
  • Supervise during meal times, assisting counsellors with food distribution.
  • Enforce the safety of all camp and staff while on or around the water.
  • Act as a resource for other staff members concerning camp programs, ideas, games, and activities.
  • Ensure that all campers follow camp rules, respecting each other and the park.
  • Actively and enthusiastically assist in leading all camp programs.
  • Maintain a positive, professional and constructive relationship with all staff members.
  • Report problems, situations and difficulties to the designated staff persons.
  • Perform additional duties and tasks as assigned by the Camp Director
  • Define and inform all staff of their roles, responsibilities and expectations in swimming program.
  • Know the qualifications of each staff member and implement a lifeguard schedule consisting of a 10:1 camper staff ratio.
  • Plan and administer waterfront program that incorporates a safe and fun atmosphere conducive to learning.
  • Establish criteria for camper and staff swim tests, to be conducted on opening day
  • Implement a set of rules and regulations for campers and staff while on the waterfront area.
  • Lead campers and staff through the waterfront rules and emergency procedures.
  • Ensure that all necessary emergency equipment is present at the waterfront during all times that waterfront is in use.
  • Supervise all waterfront activities including canoe lessons.
  • Understand and adhere to all Staff Rules & Regulations.
About You:
  • Minimum 18 years of age
  • 2-3 years of overnight camping experience
  • Lifeguard Society of Canada National Lifeguard Service Award and Lifeguard Society of Canada -Aquatic Emergency Care (Aquatic First Aid), OR YMCA Lifesaver and Guarding Course and St. John’s Ambulance Advanced First Aid course (appropriate to your provincial requirements)
  • Red Cross Water Safety instructor qualifications
  • Knowledge of diabetes management in children and youth an asset
  • Leadership experience with children and youth.
  • Basic level canoe qualifications an asset.
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Must have a valid Standard First Aid and CPR Level C certification.
