Job PostingHalifax Regional Municipality is inviting applications for the casual position of Youth Centre Coordinator with Parks & Recreation. Applicants are encouraged to self-identify on their electronic application.Under the supervision of the Community Recreation Coordinator, the Youth Centre Coordinator will support operations of the new Youth Centre opening in the Captain Willian Spry Community Centre. The Youth Centre will offer a range of services and programs for youth to access including counselling, job support, and mental health support. It is the responsibility of the Youth Centre Coordinator to create and maintain a supportive environment. The role requires an adaptable and flexible personality, comfortable completing a range of activities including leading activities, connecting youth to support services, and managing the dynamics and behaviors in the space.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead the coordination, and facilitation of drop-in activities
  • Supervise front line Youth Centre Worker staff
  • Provide resource and referral support to youth (both in-house support and external support)
  • Create and maintain a safe and inclusive space for a diverse set of youth
  • Provide orientation to all new youth attending drop-in programs
  • Active on-going engagement during drop-in times to manage dynamics and behaviors
  • Attend monthly program staff meetings
  • Carry out administrative work by recording information from shift (I.e. reporting incidents, making note of supplies needed, taking count of number of youth in attendance, etc.)
  • Promote the youth centre in the community
QUALIFICATIONS:Education and Experience:
  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Minimum two (2) years of related work or volunteer experience in a social service environment in a support capacity
  • Experience working or volunteering in an environment with at-risk youth (working or volunteering in culturally, racially diverse, and/or low-income communities)
Technical / Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of youth engagement strategies
  • Experience in leadership and group facilitation considered an asset
  • Mental Health First Aid considered an asset
  • Knowledge of current supports and services available for youth
  • Knowledge of harm reduction approaches to youth support
Conditions of Employment:
  • Applicants must complete screening through the Child Abuse Registry and a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Applicants must attend mandatory training requirements (First Aid, WHIMIS)
  • Copies of certification must be submitted upon hiring
Please note – Testing may be conducted as a component of the selection process to assess technical and job specific knowledge.
