Job Description

Starting Salary: $23.24-27.70 per hourStatus: 1-year term, part-timeJOB SUMMARYThe SHAWNA project is a community-based research project focused on the experiences of cis and trans women living with HIV in accessing and navigating care, housing, social and legal supports. The project is committed to ‘GIPA/MEPA’ principles of greater and meaningful involvement and engagement of people living with HIV. Working with the SHAWNA cohort project while being supervised by the PI, and also reporting to the PI, the Research Assistant operates as a member of a multidisciplinary, collaborative research team.The Research Assistant, working under the Principal Investigator, assists the research group in the implementation, execution and evaluation of research and research related activities, including literature reviews, data analysis and drafting of manuscripts for peer review. Assists with routine tasks in data collection, sampling, transcription, and analysis. Provides support with protocol submissions to Institutional Review Boards (IRB).Organizational StatusLocated on unceded Coast Salish territories (Vancouver, BC), the Centre for Gender and Sexual Equity (CGSHE) is a UBC Faculty of Medicine research centre (www.cgshe.ca) and affiliated with SFU. The CGSHE has a strategic mandate of leadership in promoting gender equity and sexual health for all through research, policy and practice. The Centre includes over 40 faculty members, hosts an equity-oriented and interdisciplinary training program with a large cohort of affiliated undergraduate trainees, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows, and supports a growing number of UBC/SFU community-engaged research teams working across BC, nationally and globally. CGSHE works in highly collaborative space and strives to hire members from diverse backgrounds and lived experiences.WORK PERFORMED

  • Drafts, edits and reviews manuscripts for peer review publication based on SHAWNA data
  • Performs other duties, as required to support the work of the SHAWNA cohort research team, in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.
The incumbent will work at the CGSHE in a designated, appropriate workspace at the CGSHE’s head offices located at 1190 Hornby St., and may also work from the CGSHE’s Downtown Eastside community office (647 E Hastings St). The incumbent will work from home when this is mutually agreed on between supervisor and incumbent. Travel to meetings may be required from time to time.SUPERVISION RECEIVEDWorks under direct supervision in accordance with detailed oral or written instructions; routine duties are carried out under general supervision. Reports to the Principal Investigator.SUPERVISION GIVENNone but may explain work sequences to others.CONSEQUENCES OF ERROR/JUDGEMENTThis position entails a high level of confidentiality and discretion. Failure to maintain research and program information in confidence could result in damage to credibility and poor relations with internal and external stakeholders. Errors in judgment could result in serious financial or reputational consequences for the Centre, undermining the Centre’s ability to meet commitments and achieve its strategic objectives, including the inability to successfully meet granting agencies’ deliverables. Poor public/private sector relationships could result in a negative image of CGSHE and may impact levels of research funding made available through partnerships. Errors could result in significant concerns regarding the liability, credibility, and integrity of the Centre, PHC/ PHCRI, and the University.QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school graduation and a minimum one year of related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Ability to conduct literature searches and synthesis of findings.
  • Knowledge of basic health research design and protocol development.
  • Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent time management and data entry skills.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to establish priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Computer competency with Microsoft Office Software, Reference Manager or related software.
