Job Description

Our West Fraser Hinton/Edson Woodlands has an opportunity for a:TREE IMPROVEMENT SUPERVISORReporting to the Silviculture Superintendent, the Tree Improvement Supervisor will be responsible for the preparation and implementation of Orchard operations, tree breeding and related research.Requirements:

  • Ensure that orchards, breeding plans and program work plans are current to the Alberta Forest Genetics Resources Management Standards (FGRMS).
  • Identify opportunities and prepare cost/benefit recommendations to the Company to optimize volume gain and long-term adaptation of programs in consultation with government specialists, consultants, and other cooperators.
  • Generate budgets and implement programs with adherence to health and safety programs.
  • Oversee the direction and implementation of orchard activities.
  • Ensure that seed production is maximized through optimum orchard sizing, flower production, crown management and cone collection.
  • Ensure that future cycles of breeding and related tests are completed as per cooperative and company specific work plans.
  • As part of the Silviculture Team, your contributions and duties will include the integration of reforestation activities with the tree improvement program.
  • Provide technical and policy advice for West Fraser’s programs across Alberta.

Location Summary:The West Fraser Hinton/Edson Woodlands manages over 1.26 million hectares across two Forest Management Agreement areas in the foothills of Alberta. Tree Improvement activities started in 1978 with mature orchards producing seed and new orchards under development. The Hinton/Edson Woodlands team, independently and in partnership with other industry co-operators, manages a total of five Control Parentage Programs for lodgepole pine, white spruce and black spruce.About West Fraser:West Fraser is a leading forest products company.
