Our Client, CARRY THE KETTLE NAKODA NATION, is a respected Nakoda First Nation, and part of Treaty 4 territory. Their governing office is located in Indian Head, Saskatchewan (approx 70 km from Regina), and their First Nation territory located 13 km south of Sintaluta, Sask (approx 85 km from Regina).The Chief, Council and Executive Team are implementing progressive strategic plans for sustainable growth and improvement, as well as the education, health and well-being of 120 employees and over 3,000 members. ______________________________________________________________________As Director of Finance and key member of the Senior Management Team, you will provide leadership for all aspects of financial planning, accounting, analysis and strategic recommendations. Your financial acumen and collaborative leadership style will be instrumental in leading a talented accounting team to achieve organizational goals and maintain accounting practices consistent with legislation, policy and GAAP principles, The position is based at their Indian Head office, with future growth and location plans to be at their First Nation territory near Sintaluta. Apply today to learn more! ______________________________________________________________________Your responsibilities will include:1. Senior Management and Financial planning

  • Provide strategic planning, financial expertise and advice as a contributing member of the senior management team in the areas of planning, financial management, budget development, forecasting and reporting to assure timely and sound financial control.
  • Provide policy advice and operational guidance as it relates to financial/accounting issues.
  • Lead the annual budgeting process, forecast, provide monthly and annual financial reports and analysis, monitor cash flow, account reconciliations and all financial transactions and reporting, ensuring financial management is consistent with general accepted accounting principles (GAAP) that meet audit standards.
  • Establish/maintain an effective system of internal controls to support reliable financial reporting and compliance in accordance with applicable legal agreements, laws and regulations. Implement and monitor payment authority practices. Develop financial risk management strategies.
  • Review contribution arrangements and other pertinent matters and program-related issues with government officials; provide insight into government policies and regulations.
  • Develop and implement purchasing practices and monitor the purchasing system.
  • Prepare tenders and contracts for capital and management projects. Negotiate contracts for programs and services; administer service agreement contracts. Ensure adherence to reporting requirements and to the terms and conditions of legal agreements.
  • Oversee the work of external consultants and contractors in accordance with approved contracts, legislated requirements and industry standards.
  • Provide financial advice in developing capital expenditure plans involving major improvements to infrastructure and facilities.
  • Monitor the effectiveness of human resources, finance and administrative policies. Recommend and implement improvements to enhance operational efficiencies.
2 Accounting and Team Leadership
  • Lead and oversee the day to day finance department operations and programs in order to achieve goals within available resources. Coach and supervise accounting employees, ensuring teamwork and accurate, timely accounting up to and including financial statements.
  • Critically review and assess accounting documents, returns and financial reports to ensure accuracy. This will include general accounting, payroll and benefits administration, A/P and A/R, cash management, account reconciliations and monthly financial reports. Oversee month end close activities, maintenance of the balance sheet and income statement.
  • Ensure finances are managed according to legislation, policies and procedures and generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
  • Recruit, select, evaluate and make recommendations regarding staffing; provide annual performance evaluation of staff and ensure relevant training opportunities are accessible.
  • Assist with the continuous improvement of accounting and financial processes and development of the team with the goal to achieve best practices and optimal output.
  • Build and maintain productive relationships with service providers, contractors, banking representatives and and outside accountants/auditors.
  • Review monthly financial reports and where necessary, take corrective measures to remain within approved budget. Assist with preparation and accuracy of timely financial statements.
  • Assist with audit preparation and respond to auditors’ comments concerning finances and operations; oversee required action to address deficiencies.
  • Represent the organization and its members in a professional manner and maintain a high degree of confidentiality
  • Demonstrate a willingness for continued personal and professional development by attending training and education opportunities. Participate in associations and organizations to learn about new practices and trends, to remain informed of current affairs and issues affecting finance, and to enhance professional growth.
  • Maintain an up to date knowledge of funding agreements and related requirements. Build effective working relationships with representatives of Indigenous Services Canada, as well as the outside Accounting firm regarding audits and year end.
Must have a valid Provincial Class 5 driver’s license.As the ideal Candidate, you will bring: Education: Degree in Finance, Commerce, Business or a related field. A CPA designation is preferred.Experience:7+ years of relevant work experience in progressive financial roles and in a leadership capacity with a strong knowledge of financial analysis, planning and GAAP principles and practices. Some working experience in human resources and administration.Computer:Proficient in MS Office with an emphasis on Excel.Strong working knowledge of accounting software programs, such as Sage 300 and ACCPACDesired Attributes:
