Job Description

Position: Cree Language and Cultural TeacherLocation: Mel Johnson SchoolStart Date: September 7, 2021FTE: .50 FTETerm of Employment: Term to June 30, 2022Application Deadline: Open until a suitable candidate is foundMel Johnson School is a Nursery to Grade 12 school with approximately 117 students located in thecommunity of Wabowden which is a one hour drive south of Thompson, Manitoba along Provincial Highway#6. This attractive community of approximately 700 residents is surrounded by scenic attractions such asSasagiu Rapids and Pisew Falls and the area’s natural beauty and clean lakes provide for an abundanceof outdoor recreation opportunities. The community also offers services such as a grocery store, healthcentre and hotel.Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Education Degree and Valid Manitoba Teaching Certificate (or eligibility for)
  • Previous teaching experience
  • Fluency in the Cree language both written and oral
  • Knowledge of Indigenous culture, history and the Truth and Reconciliation calls to action
  • Familiarity with the Kindergarten to Grade 12 Aboriginal Languages and Culture Manitoba Curriculum

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provide instruction to increase students ability to understand, speak and use a written form of the
Cree language
  • Incorporate Indigenous ways of life and ways of learning into classroom instruction
  • Gather resources to support language instruction including localized knowledge/speakers
  • Establish community connections with the local associations and organizations that promote
Indigenous Languages and Way of Life
  • Facilitate the coordination of school cultural activities in cooperation with fellow teachers and
