About Kahnawà:ke Education CenterThe mission of the Kahnawà:ke Education Center is to provide the children who live in Kahnawà:ke with a solid and well-rounded education laying the foundation for their future careers. The mission of KEC is carried out by the Kahnawà:ke Combined Schools Committee (KCSC) as well as the administrative arm of KEC. The KEC is responsible for the operation and support of three schools in the Kahnawà:ke community and post secondary administration.Position SummaryReporting to the Administration Manager, the Communications Officer plays a strategic role in providing communication services ensure consistent and positive messaging within the schools and the broader Community.The Communication Officer is responsible to support the organization by ensuring it is projecting a professional and positive image through internal and external communications. The responsibilities or this key role include developing and implementing communications and public relations strategies and initiatives, coordinating, planning, and producing all public relations and communications activities, and managing public relations and communications tools such as the website, Intranet and social networking accounts.Key AccountabilitiesAccountability 1: Strategic Communication Initiatives (25%)

  • In conjunction with Administration Manager and Director of Finance and Administration, develop the annual communications strategy ensuring alignment with the organization’ strategic plan
  • Develop communication objectives and communication plans for administration and schools in alignment with the overall communication strategy
  • Responsible for carrying out special projects that relate to communications initiatives to support the achievement of organizational objectives
  • Responsible for the development and maintenance of communication policies, procedures, and processes
  • Provide support to the Administration Manager including participating in the annual budget preparation process and keeping him or her informed about communication matters
  • Initiate and develop new ideas for the website and other media systems in collaboration with directors and school administration
  • Maintain up-to-date professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops/conferences; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks
Accountability 2: Promote Schools (40%)
  • Implement communication plans that project a positive image and increase the visibility of the schools within the Community
  • Gather information from employees on a regular basis to ensure up-to-date and relevant information is posted on the Intranet, website, and social media.
  • Keep staff and the Community up-to-date with KES news and events via the website, Intranet, and social media
  • Arrange for appropriate and positive publicity through different media outlets
  • Compose, edit, design, record, produce publications such as videos, press releases, newsletters, brochures and annual reports
  • Edit and organize the publication of all documents
  • Negotiate rates for publishing information for print or radio
  • Attend and communicate relevant information from Board and Committee meetings
  • Act as a spokesperson for KEC as required
Accountability 3: Manage Communications Tools (25%)
  • Work with Information Technology resources to establish and maintain a user friendly website and internal Intranet for the purposes of promoting the schools to the Community and enhancing internal communications
  • Monitor and maintain the website ensuring posted content is up to date and relevant
  • Develop data collection instruments (e.g. web chat, survey etc.) to measure public opinion and effectiveness of promotional activities (for staff and the broader Community)
  • Monitor KEC social networks, external news bulletins and various media sources on a regular basis and forward relevant information to appropriate individual(s) when applicable
  • Work with Human Resources to ensure effective distribution of KEC Employment Opportunities
Skill & Competency RequirementsCore Competencies: The necessary core competencies for this position include excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to collaborate, maintain confidentiality, to exhibit professionalism and to work effectively both independently and as part of a team. This individual will possess a high level of integrity, and an ability to build trust and demonstrate respect for people at all levels, as well as the ability to identify, analyze, evaluate and work with politically sensitive issues and complex situations and problems in order to develop creative solutions. Well-developed interpersonal communication skills and the ability to build and maintain strong relationships with employees, managers and council members are also required.Technical Competencies: Excellent verbal and writing communication skills, strong organizational skills, as well as public relations and marketing skills are necessary for this role. Proficiency in the use of technology and computer programs such as Microsoft Office, and graphic and multimedia software is critical to the success of the role.Education, Knowledge & ExperienceThis position will be of interest to candidates with:
  • Three to five years of communication, public relations, marketing or other position relevant experience
  • Experience in supporting the maintenance of websites and Intranets
  • Certificate or Bachelor’s Degree in communications, public relations or marketing
  • Knowledge of media production, communication, and dissemination techniques and methods
  • Ability to speak Kanien’kéha and basic conversational French is considered an asset
  • Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop) is an asset
  • An equivalent level of education and experience would be considered.
