SCIENCE AND ROBOTICS PROJECT COORDINATOR (KAHNAWAKE)FROM SEPTEMBER 2021 TO JUNE 2022 Youth Fusion is a registered non-profit, non-partisan organization that promotes school perseverance by engaging students in creative and motivating extra-curricular and in class activities. These projects aim to value and cultivate the abilities and interests of young people so that everyone can achieve their potential, both at school and in the community. Project coordinators in Indigenous communities have 3 main areas of activity:

• Organizing extra-curricular activities related to the project domain;

• Working with teachers to develop and animate classroom activities that help make academic knowledge more relevant for students;

• Working with local organizations to help create links between the school and community.

Since January 2010, Youth Fusion has been offering projects in various Indigenous communities. As of today, we collaborate with several nations across Quebec, New-Brunswick and Ontario. MAIN RESPONSIBILITIESThe project coordinator will be responsible for organizing and facilitating some or all of the following activities.

• FIRST LEGO LEAGUE (FLL) Robotics Project:

FIRST Lego League (FLL) is an international robotics competition for students aged 9-14. The program involves three principal components:

• Using LEGO MINDSTORM NXT technology to build and program a robot that can complete specific tasks or “missions”;

• Completing a research project, in which students propose an innovative solution to a scientific problem;

• Ensuring that participants integrate FLL’s Fundamental Values, including team-work, respect, cooperation, good sportsmanship etc.;

Training about the FLL program, software and technology will be provided.The project coordinator will collaborate with teachers from Grade 5 - Secondary 3 in order to integrate the robotics activities into the classroom. This program supports a number of curriculum objectives in the areas of Math, Science, Social Sciences and Literacy. • Delegation to the Robotics Festival in Montreal:

A team of up to 4 students will have the opportunity to travel to Montreal and compete in the robotics festival. The project coordinator must organize a local process to select the strongest team according to the three components of FLL, which will represent the school at the festival. The project coordinator will work with the school team and Youth Fusion’s directors to plan the trip to Montreal;

• In-class science workshops: Deliver curriculum-based, classroom workshops that show students the real-world science applications. Youth Fusion has a bank of activities, and the project coordinator is welcome to develop more.

• Science Fair: The project coordinator will assist elementary and high school students in preparing for the school’s science fair, and may be asked to act as a judge during the event;

• Extra-curricular activities: The project coordinator will lead an extracurricular science club once a week. The selected candidate is also encouraged to lead other extra-curricular clubs, according to their skills and interests

• In order to successfully organize these activities and maintain regular communication, the project coordinator should:

• Recruit participants and encourage students to actively participate in Science & Robotics activities;

• Collaborate with school administration, teachers and local organizations (such as the radio station, youth center, cultural department) to promote greater participation of community members;

• Manage the Youth Fusion blog.

ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES        

• Attend the Youth Fusion training ;

• Fill-out and submit timesheets, and expense reports every 2 weeks;

• Manage a budget for the project and the material inventory;

• Communicate with Youth Fusion and the school Principal on a weekly basis;

• Communicate and collaborate with school staff as well as external partners in the implementation of projects, activities and special events;

• Take part in phone calls every two weeks with Youth Fusion coordinators from the same program;

• Survey students and local partners to get feedback about activities.

• Submit a mid-term and final report, including a full list of activities and participants.

• Must be a university student or graduate in a relevant discipline;

• Must have experience working with youth;

• Experience working in a cross-cultural context is an asset;

• Knowledge of the cultures and traditions of one or more Indigenous nation and experience working with Indigenous communities and individuals.

 SKILLS

• Must be able to take initiative and work independently;

• Motivation, leadership persistence, flexibility, communication skills, vision and creativity are essential;

• Office Suite (Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

LANGUAGE

• Spoken and written English;

• Spoken and written French is an asset;

• Written and/or oral knowledge of an Indigenous language is an asset.
