Job Description

The Roads Labourer/Driver supports the Roads team to deliver superior service, safety and convenience to our residents through a variety of construction projects, snow/ice removal, and maintenance and repair services to roadways and other municipal infrastructure and properties.

  • Operates heavy motorized equipment (backhoe, grader, loader, dozer, excavator) in a safe and efficient manner to maintain Township property and transportation infrastructure;
  • Operates powered vehicles and equipment, including ariel lift platforms, street sweepers, wood chippers, tandem axle trucks, sander/salter, street sweeper, lawn mowers, chainsaw, chop saw, truck ploughs and other shop tools to repair, maintain, move, load and unload materials;
  • Uses chains and slings to position items. Installs or assists in installing attachments;
  • Responsible for conducting general maintenance functions for roads, including but not limited to minor construction projects, asphalt maintenance, sweeping, sidewalk repair/pouring, repairing and installing street signs, gravel spreading and grading, shoulder maintenance, culvert repair/replacements etc.
  • Maintains good condition of roads in winter months for safe and hazard-free movement of public by sanding, salting, snow ploughing, ice blading and shoveling roads, sidewalks and municipal lots;
  • Performs maintenance and construction activities on municipal properties, including but not limited to landscaping, install/repair fences, litter cleaning, preparing and maintaining burial sites, leaf and brush pick-up, general building and shop maintenance, assist with burial plot locations etc.;
  • Makes minor repairs, maintenance, lubricate, refuel and cleans the equipment on the job;
  • Performs and records inspection reports of equipment, maintains salt/sand records and other documentation. Recognizes malfunctions, deficiencies or unsafe situations, conditions and report to the Roads Supervisor;
  • Maintains vehicles in clean and tidy condition and makes daily inspection (including air brake check) and reports defects, etc.;
  • May be required to interpret plans and drawings;
  • Works with and may direct activities and training to other staff. Assists workers in various functions, e.g. loading and unloading of materials etc.;
  • Required to respond to emergency situations as they arise;
  • Communicates and interacts with public and contractors in a professional, courteous manner;
  • Ensures compliance with and performs all duties in accordance with Provincial Legislation and related Regulations as well as municipal policies, procedures and guidelines. Models and endorses a culture of safe work practices;
  • Supports and assists with cross-departmental work/projects when required;
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.
  • 2-4 years of experience in the operation of construction/utility equipment (and attachments) such tandem dump truck, loaders etc. as outlined in core responsibilities above.
  • Grade 12 High School Diploma or equivalent education.
  • Proven experience in the safe operation of heavy equipment, utilizing personal protective equipment and applying health and safety protocols and procedures.
  • Experience in the maintenance and construction of roads, sidewalks, culverts etc.
  • Knowledge and ability to perform minor repairs on equipment and to maintain equipment and/or vehicle in a clean, tidy safe condition.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Thorough knowledge of Provincial Traffic Laws, construction standards, by-laws and other applicable legislation, including a solid understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and applicable regulations.
  • Must be available to respond within 30 minutes to emergencies, work weekends/overtime and standby as required.
  • Must be able to work in all weather conditions and to drive in adverse and inclement weather for long periods of time.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise judgment without supervision once task has been outlined by Roads Supervisor, notifying supervisor of operational problems/issues as necessary.
  • Ensures work activity is carried out according to quality standards.
  • Basic computer skills required.
  • Outstanding customer service with the ability to provide information, ensuring courteous, tactful relations with the public.
  • Must be able to work from various job sites throughout the Township.
  • Team-oriented; demonstrates a commitment to shared success and collaboration.
Required Designations / Licenses:
  • Possess and maintain a valid unrestricted class “G” Ontario Driver’s License with satisfactory drivers abstract
  • Possess and maintain a valid unrestricted class “D” Ontario Driver’s License (with “Z” endorsement) with satisfactory drivers abstract
Preferred:
  • Valid unrestricted class “A” Ontario Driver’s License (with “Z” endorsement)
  • Traffic Control and Backing Vehicles Training
  • Surface Miner Common Core Certificate
  • Chainsaw Certificate
  • Working at Heights Training (Fall Protection/Arrest)
  • Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) Certificate
  • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) Training
  • First Aid + CPR
  • Commercial Vehicle Wheel Service (CVWS) Certificate
