We strive to create a welcoming and supportive environment where all team members take personal accountability for their work, have a passion for excellence, and are encouraged to achieve their full potential.Position SummaryUnder the direction of the Financial and Operations Manager, the Accounting Co-op Student is responsible for providing financial and administrative assistance to ensure efficient and accurate operations of the Finance Department. This multi-tasked position will gain exposure to most aspects of accounting in a not-for-profit environment, including regulatory compliance and audit. The Accounting Clerk Co-op Student is assigned work as required based on changing business needs and priorities. The Accounting Clerk Co-op Student will be provided an overview of every department at M’akola to gain a fundamental understanding of how they are all linked together in an effort to provide affordable housing to Indigenous communities. The student will receive extensive training in accounting to be able to complete the responsibilities listed below.This position is a temporary, 4-month term from Monday – Friday, 35 hours/week based out of the Victoria regional office in Langford, beginning in January 2023 with possibility of extension.Responsibilities

  • Support the Finance team in processing accounts payable;
  • Provide assistance to the Finance team to ensure that all proper supporting documents and authorizations are present for all invoices;
  • Assist in the disbursement of all forms of payments;
  • Help prepare monthly bank reconciliations;
  • Support the processing and reconciling of all bank deposits;
  • Assist in processing security deposit refunds to tenants;
  • Assist with the preparation of year ends entries to satisfy auditor requirements as required
  • Assist in liaising with regional office staff with respect to security deposit, vendor invoice, and other finance related items;
  • Support the set up new vendor credit accounts as required;
  • Provide back-up to other Finance Department staff during absences;
  • Attend staff and department meetings;
  • Maintain tenant and staff confidentiality; and
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications
  • Working towards a degree, diploma or certificate in accounting
  • No previous work experience in accounting required
  • Experience using MS Office, especially Word and Excel
  • Experience in an office environment is considered an asset
  • Experience providing direct customer service to the public is considered an asset
  • Experience in and with the Indigenous community would be an asset
  • Follow M’akola and Assisted Living policies and procedures
  • Provide a clear Criminal Record Check

  • Exhibits Cultural sensitivity and awareness
  • Ability to learn accounting programs, i.e. Great Plains.
