Position SummaryThe Recreation Coordinator is responsible for the implementation of the recreation programs, entertainment and daily activities that enrich the lives of the residents residing at Jesken Aerie Assisted Living. The Recreation Coordinator is also responsible for all aspects of volunteer recruitment and management to enhance the recreation program of Jesken Aerie, with guidance and direction from the Assisted Living Manager. The Recreation Coordinator creates and distributes timely and appropriate promotional materials to the residents, as well as maintaining all reporting requirements and documentation.This is a full-time, regular position. The schedule of work: Tuesday – Saturday, 9:00am – 3:30pm.*Responsibilities*
  • Developing and initiating cultural and non-cultural programs for the residents of Jesken Aerie in the areas of arts, crafts, music therapy, exercise programs, discussion groups, word games, bingo, and resident recreation meetings. Recreation coordination will be provided with examples from past cultural and non-cultural programs
  • Creating and submitting a monthly newsletter and activity calendar for residents using Publisher
  • Organizing various entertainment programs utilizing individual and group performers within the community
  • Coordinating outings and driving residents in the M’akola van for residents at various times of the year
  • Developing and initiating various fund-raising activities such as garage sales, craft fairs, and raffles
  • Seeking funding from other sources via proposals, donations, and sending letters
  • Overseeing and providing direction to volunteers who are assisting with various programs
  • Meeting with residents individually to discuss special interests
  • Encouraging resident participation in activities by providing additional reminders when required
  • Incorporating activities that accommodate residents who have mobility challenges
  • Reporting any observed changes in residents’ health status and/or deterioration to the Assisted Living Manager
  • Providing service that is sensitive to an individual’s ethnic, spiritual, and life experiences
  • Participating in Occupational Health and Safety Committee meetings
  • Ensuring accurate and timely completion of all documentation assigned or required in the course of duties including completion of communication logs and reporting unusual or serious incident reports
  • Responding to resident emergencies as required
*Qualifications*
  • Post-secondary education in recreation coordination
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in recreation coordination preferably with seniors, Elders and persons with disabilities
  • Minimum two year’s experience in all aspects of volunteer management
  • A combination of education and experience will be considered
  • Experience working in and with the Indigenous community is an asset
Required Knowledge and Skills
  • Strong time management, multi-tasking and organizational skills
  • Well developed written and verbal communication skills
  • Extensive knowledge and working ability with Microsoft Word, Publisher, Outlook and Excel
  • Ability to deal effectively, tactfully and patiently with Elders, seniors, and people living with Disabilities
  • Proven ability to create event posters, calendars and other promotional materials appropriate for an elderly audience
  • Effective analytical and problem solving skills
  • High degree of confidentiality, discretion and judgement
  • Ability to take initiative and respond to changing priorities

  • Completed First Aid – Level 1 (can complete once hired and paid for by M’akola)
