Works independently with students whose language levels range from basic literacy to advanced and whose computer skills vary from none to advanced. May be required to work at both campuses and outside of normal office hours.TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Coordinates registrations and registers domestic ELD students;
  • Orients and supports all ELD students in the use of the online registration systems;
  • Performs data-management tasks: class lists, wait lists, student attendance, prerequisite checks, achievement, tracking and inventory records;
  • Administers tests and does objective marking;
  • Consults with instructor regarding student progress and makes appropriate referrals;
  • Assists faculty in preparation of projects and learning materials using a variety of computerized learning technologies, such as CALL resources;
  • Ensures security and proper use of the labs and related equipment;
  • Maintains and manages departmental learning resources such as textbooks, CDs, class sets, etc.;
  • Responds to inquiries, provides information and makes referrals to individuals and groups regarding course availability and alternative courses, further educational possibilities, home-stay program, TESL, immigration matters and a variety of issues, including costs of programs and available funding relevant to ELD student clientele;
  • Adjusts timetable of ELD courses;
  • Provides tutorial support in classrooms, labs and help centres as directed by instructor;
  • Provides orientation for new instructors and substitutes to the ESL department;
  • Supervises work-study students;
  • Trains new staff;
  • Liaises with external funding agencies and other college services;
  • Upon request by relevant department or agencies, completes and forwards reports on progress and attendance, seat availability;
  • Supports students in preparing applications for funding which requires knowledge of length of program and students needs, awareness of current policies regarding ELS support funding;
  • Performs other related duties similar in scope and complexity.
QualificationsBachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline plus three years experience working with non-native English speaking adults in a multicultural setting including formal and/or informal teaching, TESL training, and computer related courses; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to work effectively with students.
