This position coordinates and is responsible for the ongoing waste collection and recycling program and collaborates with the Capital Project team on building fabric specification.The Supervisor is required to stay up to date on industry standards and trends to provide input to update policies and guidelines. This position requires working at both campuses and at various shifts including days, evenings and weekends.TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Coordinates and schedules staff for daily operations on day, evening and weekend shifts;
  • Recruits, orients, and trains staff, as well as ensures they receive appropriate training; administers personnel related activities, including employment forms, time sheets, vacation scheduling and leave requests; and performance reviews in conjunction with Manager as required;
  • Gathers and organizes information around work performance concerns and communicates performance expectations to custodial staff. Consults and refers significant performance issues to Manager; participates in the Gradual Return to Work process for all custodial staff; including providing input in regards to feasibility of the return to work schedule;
  • Meets regularly with Custodial Chargehands to review staffing, operational priorities, procedures, and policies and ensures same are being executed and/or amended as appropriate; troubleshoots as required;
  • Establishes and implements the college-wide waste and recycling services including collection, separation, storage and hauling service contracts, monitors applicable budget costs, responds to client and other applicable changing needs, meets CRD by-laws, provincial laws and municipal/community standards; follows up regularly with Manager;
  • Ensures all work and services comply with the college’s cleaning standards and schedules, Work Safe BC procedures, LEED standards (where applicable), Green Cleaning practices, and industry standards encompassing environmental
sustainability and user-friendly products and processes;
  • Researches and stays current with industry standards and innovations, including liaising with industry experts and suppliers on industry trends for cleaning products and equipment. Presents opportunities for improvements to Manager and updates departmental guidelines, policies and procedures accordingly;
  • Establishes and updates cleaning standards and procedure manuals; rolls out the updates and changes to the entire custodial team via various methods/meetings, including updating regular staff rotations to ensure training and coverage for all areas of the college;
  • Authorizes and coordinates purchases and delivery of goods and services within provided budgets; obtains quotes, creates purchase requests and coordinates contracted services;
  • Researches major equipment purchases and submits recommendations to Manager for capital expenditure;
  • Maintains associated budget cost centres, including forecasting and advising the Manager of fiscal budget status and applicable requirements;
  • Coordinates and tracks annual custodial project work including tracks status of project completion and directs custodial team on priorities;
  • Maintains regular dialogue with Manager regarding project progress, operational and emergent situations;
  • Administers and performs custodial audits using applicable audit software and/or app to document and report audit results; communicates audit results and reports recommendations to Manager; and when necessary, coordinates resulting relevant training opportunities;
  • Co-ordinates custodial requirements and set up for large events, meets with and maintains follow up with event stakeholders; delegates and may co-ordinate related activity for the custodial team;
  • Forms part of the Facilities Services emergency response team and responds to emergencies such as fire and various other facility related alarms; investigates; reports unsafe or adverse conditions as appropriate;
  • Coordinates collection of supplies inventory information and equipment maintenance requirements; works with chargehands to ensure availability of supplies and reliable equipment;
  • Researches and provides input to capital projects for new buildings or renovated spaces about building fabric and finishes that are easily maintained and cleaned, and that allow for use of the most environmentally friendly products;
  • Participates on various college committees as required;
  • Performs other related duties similar in scope and complexity.
QualificationsGrade 12 education plus the equivalent of 2 years post-secondary education in the field of Business Administration, Business Management or related field, and seven years relevant institutional experience of which five are in a supervisory capacity and includes experience leading unionized custodial teams in a public institution or post-secondary environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Conversant with Work Safe BC regulations, Capital Regional District by-laws, and other applicable regulations as required;
  • Proven effective administrative skills including experience in preparation and management of budgets;
  • Demonstrated sound judgment, initiative, leadership, and strong organizational skills;
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team;
  • Demonstrated ability in motivating and developing teams;
  • Ability to deal with sensitive and confidential issues and maintain confidentiality;
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communications skills including ability to deliver group training;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite, with intermediate spreadsheet skills, and Microsoft Outlook;
  • A valid Class 5 B.C. Driver’s license.
