Job Description

Job Title Blackfoot Language InstructorRank InstructorTenure Information TermPosition DetailsThe Department of Indigenous Studies is seeking a Blackfoot Language Instructor for a full-time 3-year term. The start date will be January 1, 2023, subject to budgetary approval.Requirements:We are looking for a Blackfoot Language Instructor with experience and/or interest in curriculum development. The successful candidate will have at least a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as Education or Indigenous Studies; graduate degrees would be an asset. Blackfoot Language teaching experience is a requirement. We are looking for someone with an interest in investigating successful adult Blackfoot second language teaching and learning methods at the post-secondary level, and a willingness to collaborate with colleagues in developing innovative new courses and programming. Candidates interested in creating open-access language teaching materials and developing their professional skills in language pedagogy are particularly welcome.Position description:The successful candidate will:

  • Teach our existing introductory Blackfoot language courses
  • Develop new intermediate-level Blackfoot language courses
  • Develop Blackfoot language curriculum and resources
  • Support Blackfoot language revitalization initiatives at the University and in the community
Depending on the background and interests of the successful candidate, additional opportunities may also include:
  • Coordinating a Master-Apprentice Program. A Master/Mentor-Apprentice Program is an innovative method for Indigenous adult language immersion (see https://fpcc.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/MAP_HANDBOOK_2012.pdf ).
  • Contributing to dual-credit outreach programs with local high schools
  • Community-based course offerings
  • Contributing to the development of degree, diploma, and certification programs in Blackfoot language and Blackfoot language teacher education
  • Liaising with the local Blackfoot communities and school boards

Within the department, Indigenous and non-Indigenous students have the opportunity to learn and think about Indigenous knowledges in creative, transformative, and critical ways. The department offers courses that engender a rigorous and respectful understanding of Indigenous peoples’ languages, knowledges, cultures, histories, politics, arts, intellectual traditions, and research methodologies.
