Job Description

The Meliorist (ME-LEE-OR-IST) is the University of Lethbridge’s independent, student-run publication. In print since 1967, the publication showcases the creativity and academic accomplishments of ULeth students through their analyses of current events, arts and culture, and the policies and practices of both the University and its Students’ Union. The publication is guided by the philosophy of Meliorism, which holds that humans can make the world a better place through intentional action. More information about The Meliorist can be found on our website: www.themeliorist.caPosition Title: News EditorReports to: Editor-in-ChiefWork Term: Partial Hours in July 2021, full hours from August 1, 2021 to April 30, 2022Applications are due by June 30th, 2021.Description: The News Editor writes original content and procures freelance content relating to local and campus news, current events, and politics. The News Editor may write pieces based on their interests in addition to assigned content. The News Editor is also expected to edit freelance submissions for grammar, readability and accuracy while preserving the author's voice. Training will be provided.Key Responsibilities

  • Meet content deadlines and produce quality work
  • Edit submissions from freelancers and/or columnists
  • Develop and write original and assigned articles
  • Conduct any necessary research for articles, including conducting interviews, taking photos, attending events and consulting first and secondary sources
  • Attend regularly scheduled staff meetings

  • Strong research and editing abilities
  • Working knowledge of the University of Lethbridge structure, administration and policies
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Well-organized and be able to work on a deadline

Work Hours and Schedule: Scheduling is flexible and hours may vary from month to month, up to a maximum of 20 hours.* Due to the precarious nature of the COVID-19 pandemic, it has not yet been decided whether this job will be done remotely or in-person.Compensation: $20/hourReimbursement of Expenses: The employee will be reimbursed for travel and other expenses incurred while carrying out responsibilities on behalf of The Meliorist Publishing Society, provided these expenses are pre-approved by the Business Manager.Note: The Meliorist Publishing Society is an equal opportunities employer.
