This position is key to an amazing team of park professionals.Reporting to the regional Recreation and Resource Coordination Team Leader, this position plays an integrated role in the facilitation and oversight of private sector recreation service delivery and commercial tourism in the South RegionOn an annual basis, this position supervises and oversees the terms and conditions of various agreements and other land use authorizations.This position ensures the consistent operational application of policy, legislation and standards related to managing recreation related land use activities in parks and protected areas designated under the Provincial Parks Act to aid in the effective, integrated and sustainable management of Alberta’s overall land base and its associated recreation, heritage resource, and ecological values.In this role, you will:

  • Provide guidance, training, advice, direction and support to regional and district staff and works directly with land use applicants, recreational / tourism disposition holders, adjacent land owners, staff of other departments, municipalities, conservation organizations, and other stakeholders.
  • Develop and implement compliance monitoring systems, inspections and related processes for the Region.
  • Make recommendations with supporting documentation for consideration by management to approve or not approve recreation /commercial dispositions special event permits and filming and photography requests.
  • Maintain databases as related to dispositions, recreation and special event agreements and land use authorizations.
  • Supervise and manage contracts related to land use, such as reclamation or weed control, and monitors construction of approved recreation developments such as lodges, rustic campgrounds, comfort camping, ski hill developments, and any other redevelopment or nee developments on existing recreational dispositions.
QualificationsEducation as per Minimum Recruitment Standards:
  • Diploma and 4 years related experience; equivalencies of one year education for one year experience or one year of experience for one year education will be considered.
You must also have knowledge in:
  • Applicable legislation including the Provincial Parks Act, Wilderness Areas, Ecological Reserves, Natural Areas and Heritage Rangelands Act, Alberta Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act, Public Lands Act, Land Stewardship Act, Wildlife Act, Fisheries Act, and Exploration Regulations.
  • First Nations legislation and Government of Alberta consultation policy and procedures.
  • Application of best management practices related to resource development, resource extraction and land reclamation, and land use management for commercial, tourism and recreation-based land users.
To be successful, you also should have:
  • Demonstrated investigative, compliance monitoring and management, analytical, negotiation and conflict management experience.
  • Ability to deal with multiple tasks and priorities with tight timelines in a highly political environment.
  • High Skill level in the use of spatial and other database systems such as GLIMPS & ArcGIS.
  • Proficiency using a wide range of equipment used for field investigation – including off-highway vehicles, boats, GPS, cameras as well as understanding what other equipment is used by companies in management of their leases and dispositions.
