Job Description

LaPrairie Works Inc. is a diversified and growing highway maintenance, construction, and transportation specialist. We come with over 40 years of operating experience in Western Canada. We provide expertise in highway and bridge maintenance, slope stabilization, and environmental remediation. We are proud to be formally recognized with industry and ministerial awards for innovation and environmental stewardship, while managing long-term contracts within both provincial and federal jurisdictions.We are looking to expand our highway maintenance operations areas and are preparing a response to an RFP announced by the Provincial Government for a highway maintenance contract in Southern Alberta.As such, LaPrairie Works is looking for applications to fill the role of Superintendent, Highway Maintenance, Southern Alberta. The successful candidate will be hired should LaPrairie Works be successful in procuring the contract for this area.The Superintendent, Highway Maintenance, under the direction of the General Manager, Highway Maintenance Operations, will primarily be responsible to ensure all employees comply with applicable legislation, including safe operation of machinery, drivers hours of service, and occupational health and safety regulations. This position will oversee staff to ensure work is being performed according to established standards.*_Key responsibilities include: _*

  • Adhere to and follow all LaPrairie’s policies and procedures, with a strong focus on safety and environment polices
  • Estimate manpower and resources required to maintain assigned highways and roads
  • Work closely with all stakeholders within LaPrairie Works and other operational groups as required
  • Provide guidance and leadership to direct reports, including but not limited to Foremen and Lead Hands
  • Ensure the effectiveness of employees through strategic hiring, assignment of duties, discipline, and dismissal
  • Analyze departmental operations and identify areas requiring improvement
  • Ensure the maintenance of vehicles is upheld
  • Ensure that safe work practices are being followed
The ideal candidate has the following:
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in highway maintenance, highway construction, or a combination of both or in a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in a management or similar role
  • Technical certification such as; CET, RET, or PM or combination of technical skills and experience will also be considered.
  • Valid Class 1 or 3 Drivers License and clean record
  • Proven experience with resource management
  • Sound analytical thinking, planning, prioritization, and execution skills
  • Ability to delegate, set expectations, and monitor progress of all direct reports
  • A well-defined sense of diplomacy, including solid negotiation, conflict resolution, and people management skills
  • Ability to identify issues and implement creative and strategic solutions to overcome problems
  • Effective leadership skills, with a strong focus on mentoring and motivation of employees
Experience:
  • Management: 5 years (Required)
  • Highway Maintenance: At least 5 years with relevant field experience in conjunction with an applicable certification or equivalent training.
