Job Description

  • Provide oversight of Contract Services/Contract Compliance monitoring installation, maintenance and/or restoration operations related to roadside and right-of-way vegetation management.
  • Utilize your knowledge of invasive plant species and best management practices and provide direction and oversight on specific programs ensuring that annual activities to control invasive plant species are addressed on time and on budget.
  • Writing agreements and auditing maintenance contractors work related to the vegetation aspects of our regional highways network.
  • Plan, direct and administer site restoration with an emphasis on native grasses, forbs, shrubs and trees.
  • Ensure compliance with contract specifications.
  • Provide recommendations on annual and multi-year business plans.
  • Utilize your experience communicating with the public including residents and agricultural operators.
  • Forecast and monitor budgets and manage deployment of funds to contracts and projects.
  • Utilize your knowledge and experience with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the Pest Control Products Act, the Pesticides Act, the Environmental Assessment Act and the Fisheries Act.
  • Utilize your knowledge related to tree planting practices and design of windbreaks.
  • Perform other services, duties and maintenance activities for roadside vegetation.
  • Manage multiple contracts simultaneously
  • Work effectively in a team engineering environment.
How do I qualifyMandatory
  • The position requires the successful candidate to have a valid class G drivers licence or equivalent. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that they have a valid drivers license upon being hired.
Technical Knowledge and Skills:
  • You have practical knowledge and have demonstrated experience in practices and procedures related to the maintenance of roadside vegetation
  • You understand and have experience with contract administration, procurement and related reporting requirements
  • You have demonstrated ability to prepare detailed cost estimates for proposed work relating to roadside vegetation
  • You can and have experience in reading and interpreting contract plans, documents and specifications
  • You can interpret and apply related legislation, quality standards, policies and contract language to ensure compliance for worksite safety and the safety of the travelling public
Other Essential Skills:
  • You have proven ability to communicate effectively including presenting information in a clear and concise manner to senior management, contractors and the public
  • You have well developed and demonstrated interpersonal and negotiation skills to make recommendations and to reach agreement with contractors and other service providers
  • You have analytical and problem-solving skills to interpret and apply highway maintenance quality standard policies/ procedures and contract terms
  • You have analytical skills to assess and determine the most practical and economical type of repair required for a transportation facility defect/failure and to collect and review data on new and inventive technologies
  • You are proficient with various computer software applications (i.e. word processing, spreadsheet, database and email)
