WTS works collaboratively with other IT groups within Western’s faculties and support units to leverage central supported technology solutions and services where appropriate.ResponsibilitiesThe Telecom/Network Technician works under the direction of a supervisor and in collaboration with the campus community, and is responsible for providing hands-on technical support, assistance and advice in the installation, operations and maintenance of the extensive cable infrastructure across the Western University campus. The role provides professional, timely solutions and support to faculty and staff and troubleshoots minor issues with materials, equipment and other tools related to projects. The Telecom/Network Technician also alerts their supervisor of equipment requiring repairs, special material requirements and coordinates service, to support the effective operation of the network cabling and telecommunications systems. The role will uphold the safe and effective use of equipment to ensure that compliance with safety standards is maintained.QualificationsEducation:

  • 2 year community college diploma in an electronics or technology program
Experience:
  • 4 years experience with equipment and instrumentation related to cable infrastructure integration (rack building, equipment and hardware assembly, cable pulling and building, system wiring/testing, installing and commissioning)
  • Experience in a higher education, commercial or corporate environment
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Familiarity with preventative maintenance techniques and practices and with blueprints and technical drawings
  • Mechanical aptitude with the ability to use hand and power tools (drills, wire cutters, fish tape, locator, basic soldering tools, fluke cable tester, link runner, amp tool)
  • Excellent troubleshooting ability along with hands-on expertise in technical support
  • Verbal and written communication skills to describe technical concepts effectively to both novice and sophisticated users
  • Ability to creatively adapt traditional methods, concepts, models or systems to new applications
  • Ability to apply critical thinking to evaluate information and make appropriate decisions or recommendations
  • Customer service skills to understand customer needs and expectations, with a desire to deliver helpful and reliable service to the University community
  • Detail-oriented with an ability to function and process information with high levels of accuracy
  • Ability to work in a fluid and evolving work environment with changing deadlines and priorities
  • Ability to investigate defined issues, solicit input, and suggest remedies and alternative approaches that meet the needs of the situation
  • Ability to take responsibility for own work and ensure that deadlines are met and outcomes are achieved
  • Computer skills with the ability to learn and use relevant software, applications or equipment that achieves required outcomes
  • Intermediate computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Visio)
  • Personable and courteous in working relationships with faculty, staff, colleagues, and external stakeholders
  • Ability to identify opportunities for improvement, while being open to trying new ideas and working methods
  • Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of the team to achieve department goals
  • Ability to lift, carry, move and position objects weighing up to 50 lbs using proper ergonomic procedures
  • Ability to work on ladders and elevated work platforms using proper safety precautions
