They are serious, progressive, and often fatal before the age of 50 years and sometimes before age 18 years. Medical advances have resulted in increased survival beyond the pediatric age group, but patients are left with emotional and psychological burden with worse social outcomes, unemployment, and homelessness. To add to an already difficult situation, patients are often from ethnic minorities (Africa, Middle East, Mediterranean, India, East Asia) where health inequities are common.In such a population, complex multidisciplinary care has been shown to improve both clinical outcomes as well as patients’ health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Such care is led by a specialist physician with experience and expertise in the illness and its effects on patients’ lives. The role of a clinically experienced Research Associate is a critical one in order to address many aspects of sickle cell disease and thalassemia care.Dr. Solh and the Red Cell Disorders Hematology Clinic are pioneering comprehensive hemoglobinopathy care in the SW Ontario region. The clinic opened in 2017 and has developed several initiatives for patient education including a collaboration with pediatrics on patient transition to adult care, close relationships with patient advocacy organizations, and patient materials.GeneralThis position requires someone with clinical experience in looking after patients with chronic diseases, including clinical assessment and monitoring, health education about illness, medications, and self-care. The Research Associate will work most closely with Dr Solh, the hematology social worker, hematology clinical fellows, IV therapy nurses, and the clinic administrative assistant. They will also interact with the inpatient medicine ward nurses, and the emergency departments. They will require strong skills of organization, initiative, and independent working ability. The Research Associate in this position will make a critical contribution to the care, health and wellbeing of these very ill and fragile patients.Responsibilities:Research/EducationEducate patients and their caregivers about sickle cell disease and thalassemia and their complications, symptoms, etcEducate patients and their caregivers about disease-modifying medications (oral hydroxyurea) in order for patient to achieve skills/knowledge required to safely self-administer these medications long-term at homeConnect patients with available educational, social, psychological support resources in the community and online (e.g. Sickle Cell Awareness Group of Ontario, or the Thalassemia Foundation of Canada)Support subject recruitment into local sickle cell disease and thalassemia research studies and pharma-sponsored clinical trialsOtherAssess and document patient status (symptoms, wellbeing, quality of life) in clinicServe as contact for patients and families on symptoms, complications, treatment plansAssess and monitor patients’ symptoms, status, side-effects/tolerance of medications especially during treatment changesPrepare documents required to assist patients to obtain government / insurance funding for complex thalassemia iron overload medications.Maintain system to track funding expiration dates to ensure no interruption of ongoing funding for essential medicationsLiaise with pharmacies to ensure delivery of medications and supplies to patientsCoordination of functional asplenia vaccinations with Health UnitFill out orthopedics referrals and ensure Xray is up to dateRate of Pay: To commensurate with experienceHours of Work: 2 days/week (15 hrs; very flexible and negotiable), weekdays / daytimeDuration of Contract: 1 year with opportunity to renewQualificationsQualifications
