We offer a warm small-town atmosphere where relationships are fundamental to our success.At this time, we invite applications for the position of: Temporary Education Assistant at Nicola Canford ElementaryThe successful candidate will work with students with exceptionalities, youth with learning disabilities, those on modified alternate programs, using sound judgement in dealing with a variety of situations under the general supervision of the classroom and support services teacher(s).To confirm required skills and ability, shortlisted applicants will undergo an academic assessment in the following areas:LiteracyMathematicsWritten AssessmentPreference will be given to those candidates successful in all of the above areas.Position Duties and ResponsibilitiesApplied knowledge of the methods and practices related to the learning style and other needs of students with exceptionalities;An understanding of the academic course content and non-academic programs as required for assigned students;Applied knowledge of behaviour theories, behaviour intervention strategies, anger management/conflict resolution techniques and situational safety assessment may be required;Ability to implement student Individual Educational Plan (IEP), Individual Care Plan, academic and other individual programs;Provide instructional support to students by implementing educational programs as determined by the teacher/resource team/principal;Operate adaptive technology, computers, audiovisual, and other various equipment;Implement behaviour management programs as outlined and determined by the teacher/resource team;Foster student independence and appropriate peer interactions;Maintain, copy, transcribe, files records on students and liaise, when required, with counsellors, social workers, parent/guardians and teachers as part of the school based team;Provides personal/health care and physical safety assistance to students;Works collaboratively and professionally as a member of the school based team; andPerforms other job related assigned comparable duties as directed.Qualifications and Attributes:Grade 12 or equivalencyMust be willing to maintain current CPI statusLevel 1 First Aid Certificate may be requiredSuccessfully completed or currently enrolled in the Education Assistant Certificate program, which includes documented training in the follow areas:Pervasive developmental disorders, including ASD, FASD and complex behavioural needsDevelopmental and sensory needs and disordersPersonal care: dressing, toileting, feeding, lifting, transferring, seizure managementTechnology assisted programs (ie. Augmentative communication devices, Boardmaker, Apps and other software)Behaviour support: conflict resolution, anger management, nonviolent behavioural interventions, behaviour/safety/crisis/emergency plansLearning challenges: learning disabilities, intellectual disabilities, learning challengesFormal POPARD training or experience - when availableProven ability to remain regulated in challenging situationsProven ability to develop positive relationships with students, staff and familiesDemonstrated ability to be flexible/adaptablePhysically able to participate in a dynamic classroom environmentAbility to work under direction of a team and also to work independentlyWHMIS Certificate and other online safety training provided by the District to be completed within the probationary periodGood interpersonal skills and the ability to be an integral part of a teamValid Class 5 BC Drivers LicenseSalary and benefits will be in accordance with the C.U.P.E.
