Job PostingHalifax Regional Municipality is inviting applications for the temporary, full time (up to 12 months) position of Intake & Assessment Coordinator with the Youth Advocate Program in Parks & Recreation. Applicants are encouraged to self-identify on their electronic application.The Youth Advocate Program Intake & Assessment Coordinator provides program support to the Program Manager as well as to the Youth Advocate team. The Intake & Assessment Coordinator is a member of the multidisciplinary Youth Advocate team and is the first point of contact for those wishing to learn more about the program or make a referral. The Intake & Assessment Coordinator is responsible for delivering a core component of the program and responds to issues and requests as required and reports to the Manager of the Youth Advocate Program.More information about the Youth Advocate Program can be found at www.halifax.ca/yapDUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Takes a lead role throughout the intake, orientation and assessment processes.
  • Builds relationships with community youth service providers such as school social workers, guidance counsellors, Restorative Justice, and African Nova Scotian School Support Workers and provides guidance and information to those wishing to submit a program referral.
  • Leads the team through the assessment and decision-making process, gathers supporting documentation and information for assessment deliberations.
  • Coordinates supplementary program initiatives and events.
  • Ability to conduct meetings covering sensitive and confidential issues.
  • Assists Youth Advocate team with case conference follow-up and action plan monitoring.
  • Provides support to Youth Advocate team as required for carrying out day to day program operations.
  • Works with the Administrative Assistant and Manager on maintaining and updating records, as well as file management.
  • Demonstrates leadership and professionalism while maintaining positive working relationships with youth and families, the public, internal and external stakeholders and management.
  • Researches, compiles, and maintains a database of supplementary and alternative youth and family service providers, resources, and supports.
  • Manages risk and adheres to safety and crisis protocols and policies.
  • May perform other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONSEducation and Experience:
  • Grade 12 (or equivalent).
  • A minimum two (2) years of related work or volunteer experience in a social service environment in a support capacity.
  • Experience working or volunteering in an urban inner-city environment with at-risk youth (working or volunteering in culturally, racially diverse, and/or low-income communities).
  • Class 5 driver’s license and access to a vehicle is required.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
Technical / Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:
  • Working knowledge of computer applications and related software (i.e. Microsoft Word and Excel).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of case management practices.
  • Knowledge of community resources and referral processes.
Security Clearance Requirements: The successful applicant will be required to successfully complete a Criminal Record Check, Vulnerable Sector Check and Child Abuse Registry Check.Please note – Testing may be conducted as a component of the selection process to assess technical and job specific knowledge. Candidates, who are selected for testing, may be tested in a group setting, scheduled at the employer’s discretion.
