Job Description

The Shelter Worker provides a safe and secure environment for clients, residents, and visitors.HOURS:

  • Flexibility in hours is expected: work includes evenings, weekends, and holidays, 12-8.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Ability to work within the mission, vision & values of The Salvation Army and Ridge Meadows Ministries
  • Use a client-centered approach by consistently demonstrating compassion, respect and empathy
  • Supports, where and when possible, the efforts of all clients and co-workers
  • Handles the admission, orientation and evaluation of clients
  • Maintains availability for personal, practical and moral support
  • Monitors the activities of clients and accurately records day-to-day happenings
  • Performs internal and external security checks
  • Provides safe storage and recording of prescribed medications
  • Liaises with referral sources and other external agencies as needed
  • Coordinates client care relating to security issues and ensures ongoing enforcement of policies
  • Involved in serving meals/snacks
  • Performs other assigned duties as required to ensure a safe and secure environment

  • CPR, First Aid, Naloxone, and Non-Violent Crisis Training
Experience:
  • Strong service ethic and a friendly disposition toward the public
  • Team-oriented and able to take initiative
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision in a fast-paced environment and cope with stressful situations
  • High standards of integrity, judgment, and confidentiality
  • Knowledge and interest in the programs and services of The Salvation Army and Ridge Meadows Ministries
Required Skills/Knowledge:
  • Effective communication skills
  • Adaptability to change and frequent interruptions
  • Willingness to work with people from diverse cultural backgrounds
  • Strong decision-making skills
  • Effective skills in conflict resolution and non-violent intervention
  • Computer and word processing ability
  • Successful obtainment of clearance through the Criminal Records Review Program
PREFERRED SKILLS/CAPABILITIES:
  • Preference to those who have completed High School plus specialized courses of up to six (6) months
  • Related experience in the social services field
  • Current valid BC driver’s license and clean driving record an asset
