It was first introduced to North America in 1999, and in 2002 the first human case of WNV infection was confirmed in Ontario. In 2004, and in response to an emerging threat, the Canadian Centre for Mosquito Management formed a partnership with Public Health Units across Southern Ontario to develop a fully integrated program of surveillance, public education, and vector management. Mosquito larviciding remains a key component of this vector management strategy, and in particular the abatement of mosquitoes in the extensive network of storm-water catch basins and in surface waters located on public properties. This unique focus has helped us to become one of the largest mosquito control providers in Canada.For more information, please visit our webpage: http://www.c2m2.caPosition SummaryAs a Biological Technician, you will be responsible for the front-line operations of West Nile Virus control in effort to reduce the spread of WNV in urban populated areas. Your core duty is the application of mosquito larvicides to urban catch basins in accordance with Municipal contract specifications and Provincial regulations. Biological Technicians operate a motorized scooter (and/or bicycle as required) during the application process. The individual in this position will work with a crew of Technicians and report to the Lead Biological Technician. The individual is expected to work independently often well removed from their base of operation, in an outdoor environment. Therefore, preplanning of daily activities, proper maintenance of scooters and equipment, and maintaining an appropriate supply of materials and other essential items is important. This position is entrusted with the use of pesticides applied in accordance with Provincial license requirements.We are looking for hard-working individuals for our West Nile Virus mosquito control programs in the following areas: York Region, Toronto, Durham Region, Middlesex-London, and Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph. The abatement programs are contracted by the local Regional Health Units. The employment term is from early June until the end of August.
