Job Description

Position: Farm Cafe Farmers Market ResearcherJob Creation Partnership position, 30 hrs per week for 6 months.The Farm Café Farmers Market Researcher, under the direction of the Program Coordinator, will play a crucial role in helping the Farm to Feast Cafe, located at the NSCC Annapolis Valley campus in Middleton, to conduct research in the development of a Farmers Market. This work involves engaging the business and farming community to identify suppliers, and in community engagement to identify the needs of local potential customers. In the short term, this work will enable the cafe to test and launch a Farmers Market on site at the Annapolis Valley NSCC that will be part of the Farmers Market Association.We are seeking an individual that is EI eligible, and is interested in serving the community and providing dignified access to food for all and that is looking to increase employability skills as they gain confidence through experiential learning.Farm Café Farmers Market Researchers’s responsibilities:

  • With the Program coordinator, develop a timeline and accountability plan, and determine preferred means for working and transportation for their employment
  • Research and identify local farms and their interest in selling products at, or through, the Farm Cafe’s market and grocery.
  • Research and identify local value add small businesses and their interest in selling products at, or through, the Farm Cafe’s market and grocery.
  • Develop a seasonal plan that would lay out the products per season for the market.
  • Develop potential design and layout of market in conjunction with Program Coordinator and involving NSCC Facilities manager as needed - includes the development of moveable display cases and refrigeration units.
  • Conduct market research on the local consumer to determine their needs and preferences, this may involve surveys but will also include facilitated community engagement sessions, and the creation of or participation in food events in the surrounding communities
  • Identify, contact and formalize the desire of other nonprofit health and wellness organizations that want to reach out to the community through our community table.
  • Develop possible models for product delivery from local farmers and businesses wanting to have us carry their product for them to offer products through our market.
  • Work with our website developer and in Airtable to input suppliers and types of products/produce the Market would carry for inventory management purposes and trackability.
  • Help to develop an online market that will align with AirTable and our website (in development now) to sell or pre-sell farmers market offerings.
  • Develop content for our social media to start featuring messaging from Farmers Market association of NS about the importance of shopping local.
  • Meet weekly with the Program Coordinator to review progress and adapt action plans to meet deadlines.
  • Attend weekly team meetings at the Farm Cafe.
  • Attend at least two monthly Board meetings, during the span of the project.
  • Attend The Atlantic Canada Food Summit - DigIn! conference in Debert with Program Coordinator Nov 17-19, 2022, and possibly other conferences or events that are identified during the span of the project.

  • The successful candidate is required to provide a Criminal Record Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search) and Child Abuse Registry Check to Program Coordinator before starting employment. We simply need to understand what it reflects for transparency purposes.
