The Cashier/ Sales Associate provides all point-of-sale functions, including recording and collecting for customer purchases, processing transactions (cash, credit card, debit card) using retail software, keeping accurate record of all cash, in-house charge, and credit card transactions (debit, gift card etc.), reconciling records of sales with cash and credit information and making sure they balance, and performing various services for customers, such as providing information and confirming prices, all done in a prompt, friendly manner. The cashier/ Sales Associate performs all assigned tasks with sufficient speed and accuracy to support store efficiency and a high level of customer service.Responsibilities: o Assist customers in locating merchandising in store, on homehardware.com, as well as processing specialo Advise the designated manager of shortages, damaged goods, back-orders etc.o Always take appropriate safety precautions when cutting pipe, glass, wire mesh, making keys etc., and try to minimize waste.o Answer the phone promptly and take messages according to store policy.o Assist customers who need advice, information, or directions.o Assist customers with carrying out of large or heavy items.o Assist customers with finding all items needed to complete their project.o Assist in training new cashiers.o Attend store meetings, training sessions, etc. as required.o Be familiar with items in stock and yard inventory, including product use and operation.o Build special displays and signage for sales, promotions, and other special events.o Call when special orders come in.o Change prices on merchandise, bins, displays, etc. as necessary.o Check incoming merchandise against invoices to spot shortages, damaged goods, back-orders, etc.o Communicate product knowledge to the customer as appropriate.o Determine customer’s needs by asking open-ended questions.o Ensure customers are greeted within 30 seconds of entering the store or your department.o Ensure customers have had a positive shopping experience; take steps to rectify if they haven’t.o Follow procedures and maintain standards according to store policy in the following areas: loss prevention, receiving and pricing goods, merchandise handling and presentation, housekeeping, reordering merchandise, restocking shelves and handling cash.o Follow proper procedures according to store policy regarding returns and refunds.o Greet and verbally communicate with customers, management, and staff both in person and by telephone.o Help unload incoming trucks.o Keep the store tidy, storage area neat, clean, and orderly. Clean the store and check-out area at the end of the shift.o Maintain price information (flyers, in-store promotions, etc.) for reference when customer price inquires arise.o Maintain the check-out area and merchandise displays.o Operate all point-of-sale equipment, including the cash register, with sufficient speed and accuracy.o Page individuals over the public address system when necessary.o Participate in regular cycle counting and assist in taking annual inventory counts.o Process special orders for non-stock or out of stock items.o Record repeat customer requests for product and follow-up when product arrives at the store.o Remove sales and promotional displays, prices etc. and rearrange stock following promotional events.o Reorder merchandise according to stores buying procedures.o Tabulate sales at the end of the day and/or end of the shift and remove cash from the register in accordance with store policy.o Verify signatures on the back of credit cards and expiry dates.o Watch for shoplifting and act according to store policy.o Work in a safe manner in accordance with provincial and federal safety legislation, as well as use of good common sense.
