Job Description

The Commercial Lines Underwriter Trainee will join the commercial insurance division and follow an expedited career path that will offer a blended experience of formal learning and on-the-job training. You will be part of a cohort of new Trainees who will work within the underwriting department, be paired with a technical coach while also aiding in the evolution of this program for future commercial lines underwriting trainees and graduates. The dynamic and challenging landscape of commercial lines underwriting provides the basis to develop analytical, communication, sales, strategic and technical skills.Working under general supervision, the Commercial Lines Underwriter Trainee is responsible for analyzing the acceptability of small property and casualty packages and low complexity business with premium volume according to company guidelines by working collaboratively with our sales force and providing excellent service to both potential and existing policyholders and brokers. The ideal candidate has a thirst for knowledge, is naturally inquisitive, open to change, has good organizational skills and can manage competing priorities to ensure we deliver a great service and live our values as a mutual insurer.Job Responsibilities

  • Perform risk analysis using technology, critical thinking, underwriting criteria as well as external data sources for the purposes of quoting, negotiating and, authorizing the acceptance of risk.
  • Maintain accurate records of decisions made and maintain completeness of policy data.
  • Negotiate, communicate decisions and respond to requests in a prompt and professional manner.
  • Complete a 12-week training program to gain foundational understanding of rating procedures, wordings, underwriting policies and regulations.
  • Work effectively towards the goals of the team.
  • Build positive working relationships with internal and external parties, including networking at industry events.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Post-secondary education or transferable work experience.
  • Willingness to enroll in, or actively pursuing a Property and Casualty Industry Designation or Certificate.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong attention to detail, analytical, problem solving and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated decision making skills with the ability to provide justification.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated planning and organizing skills with the ability to prioritize daily tasks.
  • Bilingualism (French and English) is an asset.
