Job Description

OVERVIEWWorking under the direction of Community Connections Department Manager, the Youth Inclusion Coordinator works as part of a team of MAGMA staff who ensure our clients receive a comprehensive set of settlement and integration services. The Youth Integration Coordinator’s primary focus is ensuring successful social integration and risk management for youth and young adults (aged 5–30).CORE POSITION RESPONSIBILITIESAs such, the duties fall under two broad categories:1.Community LiaisonThe coordinator’s role involves taking the lead in creating and maintaining partnerships between MAGMA andlocal community members, social/sporting organizations and other key partners. This involves:

  • Assessing the local community support for integration of newcomer children and youth, includingidentifying gaps and potential solutions where relevant.
  • Working with community partners to create and maintain programs that are best suited to newcomeryouth/children and encourage integration. This includes promoting the MAGMA cross-cultural trainingsupport for organizations to assist in program design and maintenance.
  • Liaising with community partners to ensure a smooth flow as youth enrol and participate in theiractivities.
  • Organizing and driving participation in social, cultural, and sporting activities, especially during schoolvacations. These include, but are not limited to:
oCoordinating MAGMA summer programs and/ or camps.oConnecting youth with existing March Break and Summer Break activities as well asimplementing additional sporting, team, and social activities during these periods.oThe coordinator is responsible for the operation and event planning of our MAGMA YouthClubhouse. Youth programming may fall on evenings and weekends so flexibility with schedulingis necessary.
  • Assisting with all relevant administration and logistics, such as assisting in the completion of clubenrolment documentation for the youth and educating them on transport options to participate in thenon-school activities.
  • Acting as a liaison between parents, youth, and organizational administration, including organizing accessto interpretation services where needed.
2.Youth SupportThe coordinator’s role also directly supports the youth themselves. This involves:
  • Meeting with the parents and students to perform an initial assessment of their social, cultural, sportingand recreational integration needs.
  • Educating parents and youth on the various relevant clubs, organization and activities that are available, highlighting the ones with which we have forged a strategic partnership to integrate newcomer youth more smoothly.
  • Regularly meeting with parents, students, and teachers throughout the year to assess interest, success and progress in their non-school activities, including on-site or at-home visits as needed.
  • Coordinating support for their practice and development in order to try out, audition, compete and participate equally in programs. This includes assessing equity barriers that may exist (such as unfamiliarity with winter sports, access to suitable equipment/instruments, transport issues, language barriers, etc.) and arranging for solutions. These solutions may include:
o Providing education on inclusive processes to the relevant organization.o Seeking support through requesting volunteers.o Exploring payment waiver options and financial support where necessary.
  • Assessing at-risk behaviours and ensuring support to address the issues.
  • Connecting students to relevant support roles, including but not limited to:
o School Coordinator to ensure they are successfully socially integrated at school.o Life Skills Coordinators to ensure the parents and other family members continue with the support required.o MAGMA Crisis Counselor regarding issues affecting youth.Quick Apply
