Job Description

Element has an opportunity for a Microbiology Technician I in a Food and Environment lab based in Calgary whose primary responsibility is to support laboratory operations by conducting the relevant microbiological testing.

  • Prepares material specimens for testing
  • Maintain accurate records with a strict adherence to the corporate Quality System.
  • At times operates under the supervision of a more senior test technician and/or a Department Manager
  • Interacts periodically with customers
  • Schedules internal calibration of equipment
  • Gathers and records test data
  • Constructs and maintains various test fixtures and other laboratory equipment to ensure proper working order with little supervision
  • Role includes working on week-ends and paid overtime.
  • Shifts vary between the hours of 8 AM and 8 PM 7 days a week
  • High School degree however preference will be given to applicants with post secondary education in a science related field.
  • A preference will be given to candidates with specific microbiological experience in routine food and water methodologies including but not limited to: Standard plate counts, Total coliforms, E. coli, Yeast and Mold, Salmonella, Listeria, E. coli O157:H7 and many more.
  • Microbiological techniques such as: direct plating, serial dilutions, qualitative pathogen detection, PCR, ELISA, biochemical bacterial identifications, membrane filtration, MPN and much more.
  • Experience with Allergen quantification would be an asset.
  • Excellent aseptic technique.
  • Effective time management.
  • Efficient in Windows based software applications.
  • Good English communication skills
Physical Demands:
  • Frequency of required physical force: Minimum (moderate)
  • Lifting requirements: liftinglt;50 lbs. often andgt;50 lbs. on occasion
  • Ability to stand on feet for long periods of time
  • Ability to lift 50+lbs periodically
