Quebec-Atlantic Bureau ChiefLocation: MontrealDescription of RoleWe’re looking for an energetic leader with rock-solid news judgment and a knack for generating original ideas to oversee the Quebec-Atlantic bureau of The Canadian Press. The successful candidate will be an experienced supervisor who has a hunger for breaking news, and is able to mentor and inspire staff to unearth scoops and set the agenda. This manager will oversee a group of reporters based in Montreal and three different Atlantic provinces. They will also serve as a bridge between the English and French services of CP.Responsibilities· Oversees coverage of the news report in Quebec and Atlantic Canada for CP’s digital, print, video and broadcast services, working closely with a news editor.· Supervises and schedules staff in Montreal, Halifax, Fredericton and St. John’s N.L.· Liaises with other CP bureaus and the managing editor to help co-ordinate coverage.· Liaises with editors and monitors content from our French service, La Presse Canadienne.· Assigns and edits stories.· Translates French service stories for use by English clients.· Ensures staff are generating ideas for stories on a daily basis, as well as for mid- and long-term projects.· Liaises with CP media clients.· Works closely with CP’s Sales and Marketing team on client relations.· Mentors, coaches and manages team performance by establishing specific goals and objectives.The successful candidate will:· Be fluent and able to work in both French and English.· Have a strong background in journalism including considerable experience as a manager or supervisor, and excellent knowledge of current events and issues in Quebec and Eastern Canada.· Have proven skills in using digital tools to gather news and tell stories in a variety of ways for a variety of platforms.· Be independent and bring new ideas to CP’s news report as it continues to adapt to the changing needs and demands of CP clients.· Have a proven track record covering breaking news and a basic working knowledge of media law· Encourage the optimum performance from staff on all platforms.· Be capable of representing CP in a professional manner to clients and the broader public.Please apply with a cover letter, resume and portfolio by March 6 2025.Committed to diversity, equity and inclusion The Canadian Press is an equal opportunity employer.
