Notice of Employment OpportunityBuilding OfficialThe Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) is situated within the traditional territory of several First Nations, including three that have reserves within the region: Snuneymuxw, Snaw‐Naw‐As and Qualicum. The RDN recognizes the rich cultural history of these First Nations and is committed to developing positive working relationships to the benefit of all residents of the region.ORGANIZATIONAL PROFILEThe RDN is one of 27 regional districts in the Province of British Columbia. Regional Districts across the Province strive to ensure all provincial residents have an effective form of local government, while also representing municipal residents on regional issues.The RDN provides regional governance and services to the municipalities of Nanaimo, Lantzville, Parksville, and Qualicum Beach, as well as seven unincorporated Electoral Areas. Established in 1967, the RDN is British Columbias fifth most populous Regional District and home to more than 155,000 people.The RDN is governed by a 19-member Regional Board, comprised of 12 directors from locally- elected municipal councils, and seven directors elected by Electoral Area residents. Board members also sit on a variety of regional select and standing committees for key services, as well as the RDN Committee of the Whole.ABOUT THE ROLEReporting to the Superintendent, Building Inspections, the Building Official will be responsible for reviewing and preparing permit applications, issuing permits, and inspecting buildings at various stages of construction to ensure compliance with applicable bylaws and statutes. The Building Official contributes to the effective operation of the Building Inspections Department through plan checking and the inspection of conventional and complex buildings of all categories including accessory, residential, commercial, industrial, and institutional.This position supports the Building Inspections Department by assisting team members in their duties, as required, to meet service expectations and departmental goals. Duties also include responding to public inquiries and initiating enforcement action on non-compliant structures.The ideal candidate will have a Diploma in Civil or Building Technology or an applicable trades qualification (carpentry, plumbing preferred). The candidate must have a minimum qualification with the Building Officials Association of BC for both Building and Plumbing Level 1, plus a minimum of five (5) years prior job-related experience in a local government setting. The incumbent must possess strong interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
