Hul’qumi’num Language and Culture Teacher on CallYour RoleHul’qumi’num Language and Culture Teachers provide specialized services to school sites to promote Indigenous culture and deliver a Coast Salish language and culture program based on the Hul’qumi’num Integrated Resource Package, modelling the Professional Standards for BC Educators.Students will be expected to meet the learning outcomes that have been designed to demonstrate the importance of Hul’qumi’num language learning and the Coast Salish teachings and traditions. Teachers work closely with Indigenous Education and provide an instructional focus that is inclusive of Snuneymuxw, Stz’uminus and Snaw-Naw-As First Nations, their teachings, and traditions.Prepare instruction for presentation to students in the areas of Hul’qumi’num language, indigenous studies, contemporary issues, and culture based on the Hul’qumi’num Integrated Resource PackageIntegrate local Coast Salish materials, resources, and personnel into cultural programsProvide leadership in the integration of Indigenous perspective inclusive of all indigenous peoplesMay be required to provide instructional supervision to Practicum Students, Education Assistants, or Responsible AdultsYour Education, Experience and SkillsProfessional Certification through BC Teacher Regulation BranchBachelors degree in Education or EquivalentFirst Nations Language Teacher CertificateDemonstrated knowledge of the BC Curriculum model and a concept/competency-driven curriculumDemonstrated ability to consider and respond appropriately to the needs, feels, and capabilities of othersDemonstrated ability to plan and organize for effective instruction differentiation, and assessmentDemonstrated ability to capture and maintain students’ interest, effort, participation, and enthusiasm for both the context and process of learningDemonstrated ability to create and maintain an environment that is caring, inclusive and supportive of all studentsDemonstrated ability to be flexible and adaptable to changing circumstancesDemonstrated ability to collaborate with others to achieve group goals and objectivesDemonstrated ability to utilize balanced assessment and feedback to improve student learningDemonstrated understanding and incorporation of Indigenous teachings and learningsAdditional Preferred RequirementsDemonstrated Indigenous ancestry or lived experienceProven relationships with local Coast Salish communitiesAccess to local Coast Salish materials, resources, and personnel for integration into academic and cultural programsDemonstrated ability to work successfully with students with complex and challenging learning and social and emotional needsDemonstrated alignment with school initiativesLive, Work and Play in Nanaimo-LadysmithNanaimo is centrally located on the east coast of Vancouver Island.
