School Counsellor - 1.0 Temporary to June 30, 2023. Location - John Barsby Secondary SchoolOur MissionNanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools (NLPS), together with families and communities, enable all students to become lifelong learners and productive caring citizens by providing inclusive, challenging, and engaging educational opportunities through continuous improvements of instruction and supports for learning.Job Summary:Counsellors with NLPS provide a continuum of preventative, developmental, remedial, and intervention services as a member of a multidisciplinary team approach within the District’s Response to Intervention (RTI) framework, modelling the Professional Standards for BC Educators.Counsellors work in collaboration with students, parents/guardians, school-based team, school and itinerant staff, and community agencies in the development of support systems for students and classrooms to facilitate the educational, personal, social, emotional and career development of studentsYour Duties:Advance students’ educational achievement through goal setting, assistance with the development of student learning plans and activities that promote effective work and study habitsFacilitate the goals of career education, with an emphasis in decision making, personal planning, and career awarenessProvide individual, group, and family counselling and intervention servicesProvide leadership in the identification, placement, and programming for students with complex mental health and behavioural challengesFacilitate student and family referrals to community resources and services and liaise between school, home, and agencies as appropriateReport and/or assist with reporting to the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD)Develop, coordinate, and provide leadership in the development of Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and/or student supportive plans with school and community care teams for students who require moderate and intensive behaviour supportTeach, co-teach, and/or support the delivery of prevention, social responsibility, and personal safety curriculum/programsProvide in-service and support to school staff in the areas of mental health, suicide protocol, and child abuse preventionParticipate as an active member of school-based team (S-BT) and Learning Services Support Team (LSST)Respond to critical incidentsYour Experience, Education and SkillsCertification through the BC Teacher Regulation BranchMaster’s Degree in school counselling and/or counselling psychologyMinimum 2 years successful classroom experienceDemonstrated knowledge of the BC Curriculum model and a concept/competency-driven curriculumDemonstrated ability to consider and respond appropriately to the needs, feels, and capabilities of othersDemonstrated ability to plan and organize for effective instruction differentiation, and assessmentDemonstrated ability to capture and maintain students’ interest, effort, participation, and enthusiasm for both the context and process of learningDemonstrated ability to create and maintain an environment that is caring, inclusive and supportive of all studentsDemonstrated ability to be flexible and adaptable to changing circumstancesDemonstrated ability to collaborate with others to achieve group goals and objectivesDemonstrated ability to utilize balanced assessment and feedback to improve student learningDemonstrated understanding and incorporation of Indigenous teachings and learningsWork, Live & Play in Nanaimo!Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools employs more than 2,000 professionals, all committed to the education of our nearly 15,000 students.
