Job Description

About Us: The John Howard Society of Nova Scotia has been actively serving our communities since 1950. Our mission is effective, just and humane responses to the causes and consequences of crime. We work collaboratively with clients, government and community agencies to support individuals and families who have come into conflict with the law or who are at risk of becoming involved with the criminal justice system. Our core activities include direct service provision, community education, research and resource development and advocacy. We seek capable, dedicated people to join our team and engage in this exciting and rewarding work.We are recruiting for our North Eastern Regional Office’s team. The North Eastern Regional Office delivers a wide array of supports and services with particular focus on the delivery of the Nova Scotia Restorative Justice Program in Pictou, Antigonish and Guysborough CountiesWe encourage applications from community members of diverse backgrounds, including individuals of BIPOC communities (Black, Indigenous, People of Colour) and the LGBTQ2S+ community. A criminal record does not necessarily rule out someone from eligibility, and we encourage those with lived experience to apply.Reports To: DirectorThe Administrative/Restorative Justice Caseworker, holds an essential role in The John Howard Society North East Regional office and:

  • Ensures The John Howard Society North East Regional office runs smoothly
  • Supports the team in the administration of their work
  • Works independently and as a supportive team member
  • Foster strong client relationships by greeting and assisting clients and visitors by maintaining a welcoming and professional environment
  • Assists with the delivery of the Nova Scotia Restorative Justice Program
  • Participates in ongoing educational opportunities
  • When required to do so, supports the activities of the staff and Board of Directors of The John Howard Society of Nova Scotia
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
  • General office management
  • Answer and direct calls in a pleasant and professional manner
  • Daily collection and distribution of mail
  • Report writing
  • Data Entry
  • Records Management and file storage
  • Assists with program delivery
  • Support the director in seeking out funding opportunities and completing grant applications
  • Maintains an up to date office directory
  • Helps to recruit and support training of volunteers
  • Arranges community service work placements and supervises clients who have court ordered community hours
  • Case file review and planning
  • Restorative Justice Conference Planning and implementation
  • Managing assigned caseload
  • Facilitation of Restorative meetings, as required
  • Networking with community agencies, building and strengthening relationships
  • Liaising with Justice partners when and where required

Required work experience, skills or education: Required:
  • Must have a reliable vehicle and be willing to travel throughout Pictou, Antigonish and Guysborough Counties and be able to obtain liability insurance (minimum $2 million coverage).
  • Must complete a Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Check. A criminal record does not necessarily rule out someone from eligibility and we encourage those with lived experience to apply
  • Must complete a Child Abuse Registry Check
Education:
  • College Diploma (i.e. Human Services, Social Work, etc.) or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Certification in Office Administration or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Familiar with Microsoft Office and Google Suite
Skills and Experiences:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to prioritize and good time management skills
  • High degree of cultural sensitivity
  • Listening and interview skills
  • Oral and written skills
  • Uses a holistic and trauma informed approach when working with clients

  • Conflict resolution and facilitation skills
  • Advocating for clients
  • Case management collaboration
  • Records/data base entry experience
  • Experience working with marginalized youth, adults/or communities, particularly criminalized populations
Training/Certification in the following is considered an asset: Mental Health First Aid, ASIST, NVCI and Standard First Aid.Job Types: Full-time, Fixed term contractContract length: 11 monthsSalary: $20.00-$21.00 per hourBenefits:
