You will be part of a team that provides children, youth, and adults of all ages reach feel a sense of belonging to their community.Position SummaryThis position will provide language instruction, following a task-based approach aligned to the Canadian Language Benchmarks, to adult newcomers to Canada living in smaller Centers across Nova Scotia. LINC Instructors will be responsible for:

  • Developing and delivering task based language instruction
  • Designing language instruction plans that correspond to Canadian Language Benchmarks and support achievement of students’ learning targets
  • Conducting on going needs assessments and language assessments using Canadian Language Benchmarks
  • Using Portfolio Based Language Assessment (PBLA) to track learners’ progress and schedule conference summaries or progress reports upon learner development or promotion
  • Remaining current on EAL and settlement issues that could impact and benefit program and students
  • Conducting client surveys and program evaluation
  • Maintaining up to date records of lesson plans, teaching activities, student attendance and other information as required and directed
Qualifications & Competencies
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience will be accepted
  • TESL qualification for adult learners as recognized by TESL Canada
  • 2 years teaching experience within English as an additional language setting
  • An understanding of, and ability to apply, the principles of adult education
  • An understanding of, and experience with, cross-cultural issues and how they relate to learning and integration for newcomers to Canada
  • Experience working with Canadian Language Benchmarks
  • Completion of the CLB Bootcamp online training required as prerequisite to being hired (http://learning.language.ca/)
  • The ability to demonstrate positive and effective interpersonal skills
  • Proficient with MS office applications and online communication tools
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple, competing deadlines and tasks
  • Demonstrated discretion and sound judgement in the handling of confidential information
  • Strong time management and organization skills
  • Ability to work flexible hours and work independently
  • Valid NS Drivers License and reliable vehicle essential
Note: Successful candidates will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Record Check/Vulnerable Sector Check, Child Abuse Registry Check, and proof of valid Standard First Aid and CPR training. Employees will be required to attend YMCA Child Protection Training.New language instructors will also be required to complete the PBLA for New Instructors Course, usually within the first few months of hiring, if not already completed.
