OF POSITIONS: Up to 3UNION: CUPE, Local 387HOURS OF WORK: *See belowSALARY: $35.10 per hour (2021 rates) plus 12% in lieu of benefitsThe City of New Westminster’s Art Services department is looking for a vibrant and experienced children’s art instructor to join our department to develop and lead sessional programs in our purpose-built art studios at Anvil Centre. This position requires a background in both art and instruction, with experience in either drawing, painting, printmaking, cartooning, mixed media or sculpture. The ability and interest to instruct a variety of media is considered a strong asset along with some weekend availability. Program themes are conceptualized in collaboration with the Arts Program Coordinator however instructors are encouraged to think boldly and creatively about course curriculum development. Applicants with current artistic practices (practicing and/or exhibiting) are encouraged to apply.This position will instruct mainly families, children and youth with possible adult art instruction opportunities in the future. Ideally, candidates will be available and interested to lead some Spring Break and Summer Camps (full-day or half-day) in 2023.Successful applicants will also have opportunities to connect with other service departments within the City. This could take the form of delivering community engagement projects, workshops, special event activities, installations or exhibition projects which connect, inform and connect the New Westminster community.Please note this is a contract position, and instruction hours are based on program registration.Requirements include:

  • Educational background in visual arts either through continued professional development or through completion of accredited programs.
  • Passionate about art education and sound previous instructing experience within a recreational and/or cultural studio setting.
  • Kind and approachable demeanor.
  • Responsible and punctual.
  • Excellent classroom management and organizational skills.
  • Must be able to pass and maintain a clear Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector (PIC-VS) check.
  • Please note that instruction hours of work are dependent on program registration and building scheduling (i.e. community rentals). The successful candidate will have the ability to work some weekdays, evenings and/or weekends.
