Job Description

POSITION PURPOSEReporting to the Supervisor, Court Administration, the Team Lead, Courtroom Clerk/Reporter is responsible for providing assistance and support to the Justices of the Peace while the court is in session including court reporting; preparing transcripts; assisting with the general court administration when court is not in session; and providing guidance and direction and coordinating, assigning, scheduling, checking the work of Courtroom Clerk/Reporters including certifying transcripts as required.MAJOR RESPONSIBILITES

  • Assists the Justices of the Peace to prepare for court sessions.
  • Provides the Justices of the Peace with lengthy motions and/or other legal documents to review prior to court commencing.
  • Prepares and stores tapes used by the Justices of the Peace in the Intake Court.
  • Ensures efficient operation of all recording and transcribing equipment by performing routine maintenance and advising the Supervisor if repairs are required.
  • Operates electronic/digital audio monitoring equipment to record proceedings while the court is in session; provides training to staff as required.
  • Plays proceedings previously recorded, back in court, at the direction of the Justice of the Peace.
  • Updates the Set Fine Book in the Library and Intake Court.
  • Provides guidance, training, mentoring and coordinates, assigns, schedules and checks the work of assigned staff including certifying transcripts as required
  • Responds to prosecutors, counsel, agents and the public with requests for information.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, in accordance with Branch and Department objectives.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Successful completion of a Post-Secondary diploma/certificate (1 year or more) in a Legal Assistant or Professional Program.
  • Qualified to transcribe and certify transcripts through one of the following:
  • Successful completion of a Court Transcription course with an Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities approved college (MTCU)
OR
  • Certification authorized by the Attorney General as stated in the Evidence Act (Ontario Regulation 158/03).
  • Minimum five (5) years’ experience as a Courtroom Reporter under the Ontario Court of Justice or Superior Court of Justice.
  • Knowledge of the Provincial Offences Act, Contravention Act, Courts of Justice Act and Evidence Act and court procedures.
  • Satisfactory Police Criminal Background Check.
  • Computer literacy utilizing MS Office software applications and ICON computer systems.
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated ability in corporate core competencies including Communication, Innovation, Teamwork and Collaboration, and Personal Ownership.
