Job Description

Located in the heart of the Niagara Region – just minutes from one of the world’s most well-known tourism destinations – Niagara College offers more than 130 innovative programs between our campuses in Welland and Niagara-on-the-Lake. Since opening its doors in 1967, Niagara College has grown to become a leader in education and training and one of the most enterprising colleges in Canada.Applications are invited for the position of Communications Writer in the Corporate Communications Division, located at the Niagara Corporate Business Centre located next to the Daniel J. Patterson Campus. The salary range is $62,160 to $77,699 for a 35-hour work week. Additional hours may be required, as necessary.Reporting to the Director, Communications, the successful candidate produces a full range of written communications products in support of the strategic priorities of the department and the college. They will be responsible for creating, writing, and editing internal and external communication pieces which includes planning, gathering facts and research.Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Identify and pursue story ideas that align with the College’s strategic directions and objectives
  • Create content that supports the work of the Communications Consultant while supporting internal clients
  • Works with the Director and the Communications Consultants on identifying and leveraging stories to generate earned media and raise the profile of the college through local, provincial, national, and specialized media outlets
  • Research, write and edit video scripts, presentations, speeches, promotional copy, corporate messages, and award nominations
  • Attend college events to generate written coverage for college publications and/or media materials
  • generate photos and/or video of college events for college channels as required
Qualifications:
  • A minimum of a 3-year degree/diploma in Journalism, Public Relations, Communications, English, Marketing, or similar field of study
  • A minimum of 3 years related experience in post secondary education and/or a large, complex organization
  • Demonstrated media relations experience
  • Demonstrated ability to write, edit, proofread at an advanced level in the english language with impeccable accuracy in grammar, spelling and content verification
  • Expertise in creating compelling communications pieces for a wide variety of audiences using multiple communication channels
  • Proficiency in writing full stories, converting written articles/media releases into various formats
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with staff at all levels
  • Ability to work independently and exercise good judgement and decision making
  • Proven ability to meet deadlines while managing multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment with constantly shifting priorities
