An international destination with easy access to its binational U.S. neighbour New York State, Niagara attracts over 14 million visitors annually, as well as a steady stream of new residents and businesses.Job DescriptionJOB SUMMARYNiagara Region is looking to hire a team of 5 students to administer an annual Employment Inventory from May to August 2022.This comprehensive inventory will collect data on general business characteristics and employee counts that will serve as an important resource for informing Regional and local municipal policy directions. Employment data collected through this project will help to provide a comprehensive understanding of the current employment landscape within Niagara and play a significant role in supporting decisions related to population and employment growth, infrastructure investment and the monitoring of economic conditions and trends.The students will undertake the collection of employment data through a brief door-to-door survey of businesses. This involves visiting businesses throughout Niagara and conducting in-person interviews with business owners. The students will primarily compile the inventory results on a handheld mobile device, but will also be required to perform other office duties to support the project.Location: Students will report to Niagara Regional Headquarters (1815 Sir Isaac Brock Way) throughout the work week, however, daily travel will be required within the Niagara region. Incumbent must supply own vehicle/reliable method of transportation, and be able to work both outdoors and in an office setting.Hours & Duration of Work: Monday to Friday (days), May to August 2022Job Environment

  • Work involves frequent, direct interaction with the public, representing Niagara Region
  • Work involves walking, travelling and entering data the majority of the time
  • Work involves exposure to inclement weather (ex. heat, rain, etc.)
EDUCATION
  • Completion of a high school diploma or equivalency (ex. GED), plus
  • Must be enrolled in a post-secondary program in one of the following related academic fields: Business and Administration; Geography and Environment; Computer Science; Communications; Labour Studies; Political Science; Social Science; or, Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
  • Preferred if the applicant is currently enrolled in a post-secondary co-op program
KNOWLEDGE
  • High degree of computer proficiency in Word, Excel and other Microsoft Office Suite programs
  • GIS applications and principles is an asset
  • Experience working with databases is an asset
  • Experience with use of mobile hardware and touch screen apps
  • Experience using web-based and hard copy maps for operational and navigational purposes
SKILLS
  • Ability to collect and manage information efficiently and accurately
  • Ability to work alone, as well as in a team
  • Self-motivated, confident and responsible
  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written)
  • Comfortable interacting with members of the public frequently on a daily basis
  • Comfortable performing routine and repetitive tasks (ex. data entry)
  • Comfortable working in inclement weather
  • Comfortable working in pairs/teams with other students and staff
  • Comfortable working in the field, which requires extended time on your feet and walking
  • Previous related work, co-op or volunteer experience is an asset
  • Ability to adapt to changes in assignment priority
  • Attentive to detail and resourceful.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must provide proof of successful completion of high school
  • Must provide proof of enrollment in a related post-secondary program.
  • Must provide proof of valid driver’s license & adequate automobile insurance (G class license is preferred)
  • Must have access to a reliable vehicle for daily business travel
  • Must be able to start full-time work as early as May 2, 2022
