This includes the detailed cleaning and disinfecting of the vehicle and equipment used in the transportation of patients. Additionally the position will be responsible for supporting the Supply Technician to ensure the vehicle has the required equipment and supplies. At Niagara Emergency Medical Services we do this work with a people care focus using our STAR CARE principals.QUALIFICATIONSEDUCATION

  • Grade 12 or equivalent – Required
KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE
  • Minimum six months current related experience in housekeeping/janitorial services
  • Previous experience with vehicle detailing and cleaning would be preferred
  • Previous experience cleaning in a health care setting would be preferred
  • Experience in operating and utilizing commercial/institutional housekeeping equipment and products.
  • Basic principles of Infection Prevention and Control
SKILLS
  • Must be able to work without direction
  • Must have a high attention to detail and able to follow stringent protocols for cleaning and material storage
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Must possess and maintain a valid and unrestricted specified license for the class of the vehicle operated
  • Must maintain ability to travel in a timely manner to other offices, work locations or sites as authorized by the Corporation for business reasons.
  • In accordance with the Corporate Criminal Record Check Policy, the position requires the incumbent to undergo a Criminal Records Check and submit a Canadian Police Clearance Certificate.
  • Up to date immunizations including annual flu vaccine, Hepatitis B, MMR vaccine, varicella, tetanus and pertussis vaccines.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Regularly scheduled cleaning and disinfecting of ambulance and Emergency Response Vehicle interiors and contents, as well as cleaning of exterior ambulance surfaces.
  • May be requested to perform unscheduled deep cleaning activities of ambulance vehicles in the event that a highly infectious patient is transported or should the ambulance be significantly soiled.
  • Disposal of sharps and medical waste.
  • Equipment must be removed from the vehicle prior to cleaning of the interior surfaces. This includes removing the stretcher and floor-mounted tracks, back boards, medic bags, containers for dressings, oxygen cylinders, etc.
  • Vacuuming, wet mopping and steaming of vehicle interiors.
  • Floors, walls, and ceilings of vehicles free of visible stains, dirt, soil, dust, spills, streaks, and handprints. This includes ledges, light fixtures, and dashboard and steering components in the vehicle cab.
  • The interior horizontal and vertical cupboard surfaces free of visible stains, dirt, soil, dust, spills, streaks, and handprints. This will require the removal of cabinet contents and re-stocking.
  • Tools used for cleaning cleaned and dried between uses. Mop heads laundered daily and dried prior to re-use.
  • Exterior of the vehicle free from visible dirt, mud, stains, and debris.
  • Windows, mirrors, and glass elements streak-free and free of visible dust, dirt, mud, stains, and debris.
  • Damage observed to the vehicle exterior (i.e., chips, dents, scratches, window chips, torn door seals) must be documented and reported.
  • Waste disposed of accordingly, both from the sharps bin and any general waste bins.
  • Checklist filed upon completion of the cleaning of the vehicle, detailing the cleaning and disinfecting efforts undertaken and identifying any damaged, missing, or soiled materials that could not be cleaned appropriately.

  • Follows established health and safety procedures for storing, and distribution of cleaning chemicals.
  • Makes decisions as to the most efficient method of completing duties throughout the day.
  • Some latitude exists for assessing tasks and to accordingly modify the approach in situations where SOP’s do not exist.
  • Regularly work alone in the building.

  • Work under the general direction of the Supervisor who may provide work directions and instruction, and assigns duties.

  • May provide advice and guidance to new employees and other employees with cleaning procedures.
Relationships/ContactsInternal:
  • Work independently or in a team.
  • Communicate regularly with the Supervisor and with others in the same division and department as well as employees in various departments to coordinate work, clarify information, and problem solve. Contact with Supply Technicians, Paramedics and Superintendents.
  • Maintain a good working relationship with building occupants (both Regional and non-Regional staff) and services.
Physical Demands/Dexterity
  • Required to push/pull weights of up to 900 lbs. such as industrial floor cleaning machines, carts, etc.
  • Requires lifting up to 34 kg. (70 lbs.) when moving materials, supplies, and cleaning equipment
  • Requires occasional accurate coordination of coarse movements. For example: painting, using long handle tools (broom, shovel).
  • Requires occasional coordination of fine motor skills, such as hand tools.
  • Involves walking, stooping, crouching, kneeling, bending, climbing, lifting, forceful gripping and working in awkward positions.
Concentration Demands
  • Must deal with frequent interruptions and be able to work around other staff as well as other equipment and carts
  • Mental/visual concentration when operating equipment e.g.: steam cleaner
  • Extra caution and special attention to noise and odours are required when troubleshooting equipment repairs and when working with cleaning equipment.
Job Environment
  • Operates dangerous machinery and utilizes some hazardous chemicals/substances.
  • Work is performed mostly indoors.
  • Frequent exposure to chemical and cleaning substances, dust, dirt, and odours.
  • Occasionally exposed to inclement weather and extreme temperatures when working outdoors.
  • Frequently exposed to bodily fluids and waste and blood borne pathogens.
Machines, Equipment and Materials Used
  • Washer, Dryer, steamer, vacuum cleaners, ladders, cleaning chemicals, small hand tools, a variety of carts, and occasionally ladders and scaffolds.
