  • Completion of Grade 12 plus
  • Additional post secondary education in a Two years College Program in a construction or business program (or equivalent courses) plus completion of Ontario Good Roads Association (OGRA) Anderson and Mahony Road schools or equivalent courses
  • Additional education or training with computer applications relevant to the position, i.e. Excel, Word, Web Mapping Systems (AVL) and multi data basis (MMS)
  • OGRA Snow School – Training for Operators, Supervisors and Patrollers
  • Certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid is an asset.
KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE
  • 5 years - winter maintenance or construction related fields.
  • 1 year experience in a supervisory or lead hand capacity.
  • Must be familiar with Ontario Traffic Manual (OTM) book 7 temporary conditions.
  • Must possess working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Must possess knowledge of the Minimum Maintenance Standards outlined by the province of Ontario.
  • Must possess knowledge of the Area Maintenance contract specifically in the area of quality assurance.
  • Must complete WHMIS training.
  • Must possess knowledge of Region of Niagara’s Operators Training Manual.
CERTIFICATION
  • Must be eligible for certification as a Certified Road Supervisor with the Association of Ontario Road Supervisors
SKILLS
  • Must have excellent communication skills to communicate to the public, co-workers and when necessary Legal council.
  • Must be competent in the use of a computer and be able to use Microsoft word, outlook, excel, Web
Mapping Systems (i.e. AVL), and the Regional Weather Portal.
  • Must be capable of working independently without direct supervision.
  • Must possess excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Must possess an excellent knowledge of Region o Niagara’s Salt Management Plan.
  • Must possess the ability to direct other employees.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Must possess and maintain a valid and unrestricted specified “DZ” license for the class of the vehicle operated.
  • Must be willing to adhere to the Corporate Purchasing card policies.
  • Must be willing and able to take additional training as required.
  • Must be capable of working on a call-out basis for winter maintenance activities in sometimes extreme weather conditions.
  • May be subject to shift work.
Seasonal Job DescriptionJOB SUMMARY - ROAD MAINTENANCE LEAD HANDAssist the Road Operations Supervisor in the maintenance of the regional road system in an assigned area to ensure an efficient operation and to meet council-approved levels of service.EDUCATION
  • Completion of Grade 12 plus
  • Additional post secondary education in a One to Two years College Program in a construction or business program (or equivalent courses) plus completion of Ontario Good Roads Association (OGRA) Anderson and Mahony Road schools or equivalent courses
  • Additional education or training with computer applications relevant to the position, i.e. Excel, Word, Web Mapping Systems (AVL) and multi data basis (MMS)
  • Completion of Scott McKay Bituminous Technology, Soils Technology and Concrete Technology or equivalent courses would be an asset
  • Must complete WHMIS training.
KNOWLEDGE
  • 5 years - summer maintenance or construction related fields.
  • 1 year experience in a supervisory or lead hand capacity.
  • Must possess an excellent knowledge of Region of Niagara’s Transportations Quality Standards.
  • Must possess an excellent knowledge of Transportation’s Methods and Procedures Manual.
  • Must possess practical experience in all phases of summer maintenance activities including ditching, mowing, asphalt repairs, bridge and culverts, shouldering, and catch basin/sewer repairs.
  • Must possess knowledge of Region of Niagara’s Operators Training Manual.
  • Certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid is an asset.
  • Must be familiar with Ontario Traffic Manual (OTM) book 7 temporary conditions.
  • Must possess working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Must possess knowledge of the Minimum Maintenance Standards outlined by the province of Ontario.
  • Must possess knowledge of surveying techniques, including grade and alignment.
  • Must be competent in operating tools and equipment related to summer maintenance related activities.
