DivisionLong Term Care HomesJob DescriptionThis posting is for the collection of applicants with interest in RPN positions through the Nursing Graduate Guarantee Program in multiple locations across Niagara Region Long-Term Care Homes.WHAT IS THE NURSING GRADUATE GUARANTEEThe Nursing Graduate Guarantee (NGG) program is funded by the ministry of health. This program supports new Registered Practical Nurses who are within 12 months of registering with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) by providing them with a temporary full-time employment opportunity, above staffing complement to improve their transition into practice, and into full-time employment. This program is for:Canadian Educated Nurses who:

  • Certificate from an approved College, or a diploma from an approved University, in a recognized Registered Practical Nursing program.
  • Match with an employer on the NGG online portal within 12 months of registering with the CNO; and
  • Commit to accepting full-time employment or the equivalent of full-time hours with their NGG employer after completing the NGG program transition into practice period.
Internationally Educated Nurses who:
  • Completed their Registered Practical Nursing education outside of Canada;
  • Match with an employer on the NGG online portal within 12 months of registering with the CNO; and
  • Commit to accepting full-time employment or the equivalent of full-time hours with their NGG employer after completing the NGG program transition into practice period.
EDUCATION
  • Diploma from an approved Practical Nurse Program with Medication Certificate.
  • Training in Gentle Persuasive Approaches (GPA) preferred.
KNOWLEDGE
  • Experience in administration of medications, including performing injections
  • Knowledge of resident/client safety issues and demonstrated capacity to apply resident/client safety practices
SKILLS
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities.
  • Demonstrated interest, compassion, respect and patience in their work with cognitively impaired residents/clients and their families.
  • Demonstrated flexibility and resourcefulness in achieving resident/client quality of life outcomes.
  • Ability to perform CPR as required, as per College of Nurses Standard.
  • Demonstrated computer skills and ability to use nursing related applications.
  • Demonstrated communication skills.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and development.
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm, flexibility and ability to cope with change.
  • Demonstrated commitment to resident/client/family centered care.
Requirements
  • Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario in good standing.
  • Completed courses in Administration of Medications for Registered Practical Nurse, and Nursing Process.
  • Must be eligible for the Nursing Graduate Guarantee Funding
  • In accordance with the Corporate Criminal Record Check Policy, the position requires the incumbent to undergo a Criminal Records Check and submit a Canadian Police Clearance Certificate including a vulnerable sector search.
  • Physically and mentally capable of performing the duties of the job and have an excellent rapport with elderly people.
  • Strong background in long-term care, community consultation and geriatric mental health
  • Must be able and available to work all shifts, weekends, and statutory holidays, as required
  • Must be willing to accept a Full-Time or Temporary Full-Time position with Niagara Region within one year.
