An international destination with easy access to its binational U.S. neighbour New York State, Niagara attracts over 14 million visitors annually, as well as a steady stream of new residents and businesses.Please note that the Niagara Region requires that all newly hired employees are to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as a condition of being hired and provide proof of full vaccination, or provide proof of a bona fide medical or Human Rights Code exemption on a form issued from and approved by Niagara Region.Job DescriptionJOB SUMMARYNiagara Region is looking to hire a Road Safety and Permit Coop Student to join an innovative and creative team that is working collaboratively across regional departments, engaging with community organizations and other stakeholders to achieve the important lifesaving goals of Vision Zero encompasses and deliver a broad range of Road Safety Initiatives and reviewing road use permits including automated enforcement, developing and validating collision reports, development applications, permit applications, and- traffic demand management mappingThe student will be responsible for:

  • Assist staff in Road Safety Initiatives and Road Use Permitting and collision statistics, reviewing road safety complaints;
  • Research and provide input on broader market sector strategic planning and innovation initiatives for road safety, and permit application review process;
  • Assist in traffic studies, by-law amendments and road safety recommendations;
  • Conduct engineering analysis for traffic evaluation, to ensure the movements of people and goods on the regional roads are safe;
  • Assist the team in developing a project scope, terms of reference, and the Request for Proposal documents for traffic studies;
  • Assist in the development and delivery of proposals, project schedules, constraints, and evaluation
  • Assist in the review of drawings and specifications, development of construction contracts, during the process of permit approvals and collaboration with other divisional staff.
  • Assist in directing consultants to ensure that all projects are completed on time, within the approved budget and specifications
  • Inspect construction sites to ensure compliance with the permit conditions and that construction practices comply with safety guidelines.
  • Conduct site surveys to determine which assets exist, photographing the assets, documenting their condition and identifying damaged/missing assets; and
  • Other duties as assigned/required.
Students will be required to undertake site visits and participate in meetings with stakeholders, therefore the applicant should be outgoing and confident in a variety of environments.Location - Students will report to Niagara Regional Headquarters (1815 Sir Isaac Brock Way) throughout the work week, however, daily travel will be required within the Niagara region. Incumbent must supply own reliable method of transportation, and be able to work both outdoors and in an office setting.Hours and duration of work: A standard work week is 35 hours, Monday to Friday, February to June 2022. Typical office hours are 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, however, on some occasions it will be necessary to shift the start and/or end times, to accommodate required activities. This position is subject to extension.EDUCATION
  • Completion of high school diploma or equivalency.
  • Currently enrolled in Transportation/Civil Engineering, Traffic engineering, Project Management or similar program or related fields of study.
KNOWLEDGE
  • High degree of computer proficiency in Word, Excel and other Microsoft Office Suite programs.
  • Experience working with traffic engineering is considered an asset.
  • Experience with web-based and hard copy maps for operational and navigational purposes.
  • Familiarity with projects and environmental assessment studies considered an asset.
SKILLS
  • Ability to collect and manage information efficiently and accurately.
  • Hands-on data collection, traffic analysis and statistical data will be an asset

  • Ability to work alone, as well as in a team.
  • Self-motivated, confident and responsible.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral).
  • Comfortable interacting with members of the public on a regular basis.
  • Comfortable performing routine and repetitive tasks (ex. data entry).
  • Comfortable working in inclement weather.
  • Previous related work, co-op or volunteer experience is an asset.
  • Ability to adapt to changes in assignment priority.
  • Attentive to detail and resourceful.
  • Familiarity with Highway Traffic Act and/or Municipal Act are/is considered an asset
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must provide proof of successful completion of high school.
  • Must maintain the ability to travel in a timely manner to other offices and work locations or sites as authorized by the Corporation for business reasons.
  • Possess a valid class G license and a clean driving record
