An international destination with easy access to its binational U.S. neighbour New York State, Niagara attracts over 14 million visitors annually, as well as a steady stream of new residents and businesses.Please note that the Niagara Region requires that all newly hired employees are to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as a condition of being hired and provide proof of full vaccination, or provide proof of a bona fide medical or Human Rights Code exemption on a form issued from and approved by Niagara Region.Job DescriptionJOB SUMMARYPerform all tree maintenance activities by assisting Arborists in the delivery of the Niagara Regions Urban Forestry program. Associated tasks will include (but not limited to); tree planting, stump grinding, tree pruning and tree removal. Operate vehicles over 11,000 kg. Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW), with special attachments such as; aerial lift device, mobile crane and dump box.QUALIFICATIONSEDUCATION

  • Completion of Grade 12.
  • Completion of an Arboriculture training program is an asset.
  • Certified Arborist designation with the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) is preferred.
KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of experience working in the Arboriculture field.
  • Must be familiar with the basic principles of Book 7 – Ontario Traffic Manual, and have proof of training.
  • Must possess Chain Saw Operator and Chipper Operator certifications.
  • Must have completed IHSA – Line Clearing – Safety and Awareness (2 day) certification program.
  • Must have Working at Heights certification.
  • Must have 0-8 ton crane license.
  • Must have and maintain a current certification in WHIMS, First Aid and CPR.
  • Must complete aerial lift rescue training with IHSA (within 1yr of hire)
  • Must have good knowledge of basic tools and equipment related to tree maintenance activities.
  • Must have basic knowledge of Arboriculture rigging practices for ground workers.
  • Must have good knowledge of knots used in the Arboriculture industry.
  • Must have good tree identification skills.
  • Must understand basic principles of tree climbing.
  • Must be familiar with OHSA and how it applies to the work being performed.
  • Must be familiar with utility locates and able to read/use in the field.
  • Must have working knowledge of computer applications relevant to this position (E.g. Outlook, Excel, Word, GIS).
SKILLS
  • Must be able to set up a port-a-wrap utilizing acceptable knot(s).
  • Must have a mechanical aptitude.
  • Must be competent in the safe operation of various sized chainsaws and industrial wood chippers.
  • Must have the ability to maintain chainsaws and other small equipment.
  • Must have excellent communication skills to communicate effectively with the public and co-workers.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Must possess and maintain a valid and unrestricted specified license (DZ) for the class of the vehicle operated.
  • Must be willing to work on a call-in basis for emergency work.
  • Must be willing to take additional training as required.
