This is an excellent opportunity for a recent graduate of a post-secondary degree, diploma or certificate program in Environmental Science/Management, Geography, Environmental/Urban Planning, Education, Business Communication or a related field of study.Current Location: Niagara Recycling Centre (Niagara Falls, ON); travel throughout the Niagara Region is requiredWaste Management Services is part of the Public Works Department, and is responsible for providing cost-effective and environmentally sound waste management programs/services to the residents and businesses of the twelve Niagara municipalities. Waste Management Services is divided into four main sections: Waste Disposal Operations, Collection & Diversion Operations, Policy & Planning, and Engineering and Compliance. Each section is responsible for various services and programs. This position primarily works the on-road staff (Collection & Diversion Advisors, Contract Supervisors and the Supervisor, Collection and Diversion Operations).Waste Management Interns work both independently and as part of a team to promote the Region’s various waste management programs. Interns educate residents and businesses about the importance of diverting materials from landfills while promoting the Region’s waste management services. The WM Interns interact with members of the public over the phone, through face-to-face interaction as well as written communication.Physical Demands:

  • Candidate must be able to lift / push 22.7 kg (50 lbs.)
QUALIFICATIONSEDUCATION
  • Must have successfully completed an Environmental Science/Management, Geography, Environmental/Urban Planning, Business Communications, Education or related post-secondary degree/diploma program within the last 18 months (or will successfully complete prior to starting this position)
KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE
  • Knowledge of waste management issues and legislation is a definite asset
  • Understanding of Regional/Municipal Government policies/practices is an asset
  • Experience undertaking waste audits is an asset

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Audits, Site Visits and Education
    • Educate residents on proper rules and procedures for setting out material for collection.
    • Provide educational and program information to residents while in the field.
    • Complete visual waste audits and summarizes data in report form. These audits involve in-field visual auditing, data collection, analysis of results and the educating residents through face-to-face communication.
    • Complete physical audits of waste materials to determine composition and presences of generator material for education or enforcement purposes.
    • Monitor, track and provide corrective recommendations for problem locations.
    • Acts as Regional representative to the Public.
  • Contractor Monitoring
    • Assist in the monitoring of the curbside collection contractor to ensure the requirements directly affecting residents are adhered to including but not limited to proper bin placement, following the proper tagging procedures, picking up the required limits, bin placement, emptying bins completely, not collecting inappropriate material, confirm collection is occurring at correct times etc.
    • Provide field support for on-road and management staff.
  • Administrative Duties
    • Respond to residents verbal and written enquires.
    • Summarize data from audits and report results back to Supervisor.
    • Provide administrative support to on-road team such as: reviewing GPS records, data entry tasks, letter writing and entering records into the issue management system.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Must meet the minimum qualifications as outlined in the Educational section
  • Must be available to work weekends, mornings and evenings as required
  • Must hold a valid, unrestricted G class driver’s license and have access to a reliable vehicle due to frequent business travel. G2 licences are not acceptable.
  • Must be able to work full-time for the temporary duration advertised
  • This position requires the successful applicant submit a satisfactory drivers abstract as determined by Niagara Region as a condition of hire
  • Must provide own CSA-approved safety work boots if hired
  • Must be able to work independently in the field. Position does include frequent exposure to waste, odors and inclement weather.
