The program aims to use Afrocentric perspectives as the foundation of all literacy and numeracy activities, providing various points of entry and opportunities for success and achievements for all participants. The program’s goal is to enhance partnership with parents and caregivers, setting high expectations for success, and commitment to developing the whole learner in a place of belonging.This program will build on and deepen the Ontario curriculum, by offering strong connections through culturally responsive approaches to learning, applicable rich tasks, and centre relationships and community. Black identities will be celebrated by affirming students’ strengths as learners. The program will invite speakers from the community to share their knowledge and lived experiences in real-life contexts, and through the exploration and recognition of diverse Black perspectives.Through this innovative program we seek to achieve the following:

  • Provide the opportunity to deepen and extend students’ skills in literacy and/or numeracy, or to reach ahead and learn new skills to prepare for the next grade.
  • Provide the opportunity for inquiry-based learning and promote critical thinking skills, to extend and deepen content knowledge around Black History and current issues.
  • Demonstrate sound foundational practices in Afrocentric responsive curriculum to further classroom practices (Compendium of Action for Black Student Success: Area #4)
  • Provide culturally relevant and responsive opportunities and activities that involve Black families and the Black community, in supporting each other, as a village, through social interactions, events and activities such as paint night, financial literacy, cooking sessions, communication/advocacy skills etc.
  • Provide mentorship from current Black secondary students to support a smooth landing by establishing strong connections
  • Infuse key technology and learning skills that are important for success in learning, inquiry-based research, access and engagement for diverse learning environments including in-person learning, blended learning and e-learning
  • This program will engage Black students in other activities that will reinforce/strengthen problem-solving, creativity, collaboration, reasoning, among other soft skills
