Job Description

Durham College seeks a strategic and visionary leader for its Professional and Part-time Learning (PPL) department. Reporting to the Executive Dean, Faculty of Liberal Studies and PPL / Teaching, Learning, and Program Quality, the Dean is accountable for providing direction and innovative leadership to ensure ongoing success within a highly competitive and rapidly changing external environment. The incumbent will be responsible for identifying and seizing business development opportunities, developing new programs and courses as well as renewing existing offerings. The Dean will lead a high-performing team, and be accountable for the department’s complex operations, maintaining strong service standards and fiscal responsibility, and ensuring high-quality learning and delivery across all modalities. The ability to effectively manage a broad portfolio of offerings across disciplines including health, trades, business, technology, education, and languages will be essential.In addition to working closely with other academic leaders throughout Durham College on a continual basis, the Dean will work extensively with their counterparts from other Ontario colleges as well as institutions throughout Canada, various Ministry groups and OntarioLearn on an ongoing basis. Developing and sustaining insights into emerging employer needs and changes in a wide range of industries will be essential for success in this role. The Dean will contribute to and/or take the lead on a variety of college-wide initiatives.The Dean will:

  • Hold a Master’s degree, with a Ph.D. being an asset, in a relevant academic discipline;
  • Have a minimum of eleven years of experience in a professional setting including a minimum of five years of significant leadership experience in an academic setting and a demonstrated track record of excellence in management, leadership and team development;
  • Have demonstrated success in business development, budgeting, partnership negotiation, and relationship management;
  • Have proven ability to develop, lead and maintain partnerships internally and externally including with other educational institutions and the broader local, national and international communities;
  • Have deep experiences developing digital learning opportunities and flexible online courses and programs;
  • Possess strong administrative skills, with a proven capacity to handle extensive detail, conduct in-depth data analyses, set goals, achieve objectives, and develop and present recommendations to senior leaders in the College;
  • Have experience fostering a culture of equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) and a commitment to the Indigenous Education Protocol for Colleges and Institutes;
  • Have outstanding communication, negotiation and collaboration skills, with the ability to work with a wide range of individuals with diverse backgrounds and needs;
  • Possess strong skills in conflict resolution, problem-solving, resilience, advocacy abilities to support students, faculty and staff, as well as familiarity with the changing landscapes in both industry and continuing education sectors.
