We are looking for the most creative talent who have a passion for innovation, multi-modal transportation, and urban mobility solutions. As an Embedded Controls and Electronics Specialist - Urban Mobility, you will contribute to the development of new innovative electrical and connectivity system solutions for future GM Urban Mobility products. You will be part of a multi-functional team, working with global partners and suppliers to take to production new products and support existing ones. You will also use invention/ideation in order to develop new innovative solutions for future GM products.We are looking for individuals who demonstrate creativity, initiative and a high level of independent judgment that share a genuine passion for technology and controls/electrical systems.Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement creative engineering solutions for future products and protect intellectual property through patents and publications.
  • Design, prototype, and build custom circuit boards and PCB for low volume prototypes.
  • Create custom embedded firmware for urban mobility-specific products and prototypes.
  • Develop rapid prototypes using development boards and modules such as, but not limited to, Arduino, Raspberry Pi, Beaglebone, STM32, etc.
  • Design and build test equipment and test benches while meeting all GM safety apparatus protocols.
  • Develop design alternatives and present them to management for decision.
  • Perform design analysis and product evaluations for future technology.
  • Manage supplier timing; lead or support product development team meetings; issue investigation and resolution; ensure part and/or software deliveries to benches, vehicles, and assembly plants; etc.
  • Communicate, coordinate, and advise other engineering departments, suppliers and customers for overall engineering activities.
  • Collaborate with departments outside engineering, such as planning and purchasing.
  • Support build events, including both physical and virtual builds.
  • Own component functional and non-functional requirements. Work closely with other component owners, Cyber security, system safety, regulatory, and validation engineers and manage changes.
  • Manage interface control documents (ICDm and ICDe) for both component and subsystem and work with integration counterparts to develop robust and efficient solutions.
  • Support multi-functional project teams in an agile scrum framework or a staged gate process to achieve project or program milestones.
  • Stay abreast of new technology and competitive products.
  • Capture key technological findings and update Best Practices, Technical Specifications and Bill of Materials.
  • Travel as required - typically 2-4 weeks per year, primarily to Michigan and other locations in the US (once past current health pandemic).
Additional Job DescriptionRequired Skills and Experience
  • 3+ years of relevant Design Engineering experience, including developing control systems and designing electronics
  • Experience with embedded software design, Simulink modeling, MABx and C/C++ and Python programming
  • Experience with electronic analysis, design, and PCB layout software
  • Experience with electronic prototyping which may include building wiring harnesses, electronic prototypes, debugging, and reworking of harnesses, PCB, etc.
  • Strong understanding of electrical/communication/network subsystems, including CAN, LIN, ethernet, Serial, I2C, etc.
  • Expertise in developing various levels of technical specifications for mechatronic systems
  • Experience with technologies such as safety sensors and systems, ADAS, Motor Controls, CyberSecurity, CAN/EnergyBus, Ethernet, or Infotainment Systems
  • Knowledge of control systems architectures, automotive serial data communication protocols and hardware/software interfaces.
  • History of success in applying advanced technology to enhance usability of complex systems
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated high level of analytical ability to solve complex problems
  • High level of interpersonal skills to work effectively with others
  • Demonstrated self-starter who can work independently and deal with ambiguity
  • Minimum bachelors degree in Engineering (Electrical, Controls, or Mechatronics), or related degree.
  • Successful candidates will be required to attest to, and be prepared to provide proof of, their vaccination status and that any job offer will be conditional on the candidate being fully vaccinated.
Preferred Skills and Experience
  • DFSS Black Belt or Red X Master.
  • Fluency in English. Other languages beneficial.
  • Understanding of power electronics, which may include: motor drives and inverter control methodologies; DC and AC machine operations; current and position measurement and estimations; space vector PWM; field-oriented controls for sensor and sensor-less systems.
  • Knowledge of battery management and power management systems. SOC, SOH, and Power Limits estimations, as well as cell/pack models and Kalman filtering. Knowledge of hardware and software system safety requirements based on ISO 26262 and ASIL ratings.
  • Experience in advanced controls, diagnostics and algorithm design techniques and their calibration methods.
  • Experience working with wireless protocol such as Bluetooth, WiFi, UWB, etc. Familiarity with Vehicle Development and Production Launch process
  • Advanced degree (Masters or PhD) in Engineering (Control Systems, Mechatronics, Software and Controls, Electrical, Mechanical, Systems) or Computer Science.
