The position is offered for 24 months, preferably starting in September 2021, subject to funding approval and may be extended contingent upon research performance.The Centre on Hate, Bias and Extremism (CHBE) invites applications for a two-year Post-Doctoral Fellow position for a specific project. The Use of Restorative Justice in Hate Crimes, is part of a bigger SSHRC-funded project entitled “Finding the Gaps: Criminal Justice Processing of Hate Crime”.There is no more pressing time to turn our attention to hate crime. There was a 47% increase in police reported hate crime between 2016 and 2017, with only a 13% decrease the following year (Armstrong, 2019). This has emerged in the context of a broader global - and Canadian - resurgence of organized hate groups targeting such diverse communities as immigrants, Muslims, Jews, and the LGBTQ+ community. However, there is no Canadian scholarship that systematically explores the conditions and contexts that shape decision making when it comes to responding to hate crime.The current project, modelled after a successful five nation European study, proposes a comprehensive review of the way hate crime progresses from the act, to reporting, to prosecution, to sentencing (Schweppe, Haynes and Walters, 2018).While court decisions can provide insight into sentencing decisions of both general and specific hate crimes, when restorative processes are engaged, there is little documentation available. This in-depth look at the use of restorative justice in hate crimes is intended to improve understanding of how restorative justice practices can work in such cases.Responsibilities/Accountabilities:The Post-Doctoral Fellow (PDF) will investigate how restorative justice processes are being used in cases of hate crimes in Canada and would conduct up to six case studies drawn from across Canada. In-depth qualitative interviews would be undertaken with the key stakeholders: Judges, Crowns, defence counsel, law enforcement, restorative justice program facilitators and victim services, as well as the parties themselves, where appropriate and feasible. Key themes to explore would include the processes used (i.e. Victim Offender Mediation, Dialogue Circles, etc.), the impacts on victims, offender, and the communities involved and effects on recidivism. This element of the project will be time and labour intensive, and requires specialized knowledge and expertise in the area of restorative justice. The PDF will be supervised by Dr. Barbara Perry, with secondary supervision by Susan McDonald, Principal Researcher at the Department of Justice Canada.Required SkillsAptitude and training and/or experience in qualitative research;Record of engagement in criminology, legal studies, restorative justice, or other related field;Strong interviewing skills;Strong writing, analytic, and critical thinking skills;Strong communication and organizational skills;Self-motivated, able to bring projects to completion;Willing to learn; and,Ability to work independently and as part of a team.Education:Doctoral degree or near completion (ABD may be considered) in Criminology, Sociology, or other relevant fieldPosition /Location:The Fellowship is a full-time, two-year position.
