Job Description

The Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) is seeking an Instructional Design Consultant. Reporting to the director, Educational Development, the incumbent provides instructional design advice, guidance and support to faculty, subject-matter experts (SMEs), staff and administrators through the application of current evidence-based principles and Universal Design for Learning (UDL).The incumbent will advise professors, SMEs, and course developers on areas including instructional design processes, science of learning principles, educational technology, learning activities and accessibility standards and implementation to drive course development that is engaging for students. The incumbent will be required to work both independently and collaboratively in a team consisting of faculty, SMEs, and members of the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL).The incumbent will have a successful track record of managing projects and deadlines, be task-oriented, have a demonstrated ability to deal with conflicting priorities, and experience working with and building in learning management systems such as Desire2Learn. Experience working with design applications (ex. H5P, Adobe Creative Suite, etc.) would be considered an asset. The incumbent will possess excellent communication and relationship building skills, as well as a deep understanding of current pedagogical and instructional design principles and accessibility standards including UDL and AODA. The Instructional Design Consultant will be responsible for staying current on research and assessing trends and technologies related to instructional design and accessibility (ex. UDL, HyFlex and online delivery, AODA). The incumbent will collaborate with the CTL team to develop and deliver professional development workshops to professors, staff and administrators, develop online materials to support capacity building in instructional design principles.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide training, coaching and direct support to professors, SMEs and other stakeholders as required in Instructional Design principles including digital pedagogy, and implementation of Universal Design for Learning, design thinking and science of learning principles in DC Connect (D2L Brightspace) course and assessment design.
  • Develop and implement innovative strategies and support materials for professors, course developers and other stakeholders to increase capacity in developing courses that are accessible, meaningful and engaging
  • Provide training and support for professors teaching in HyFlex, online and remote course delivery, including pedagogical considerations and assessment strategies.
  • Ensure successful completion of assigned projects through regular reporting, active coordination and management of project teams, timelines and competing priorities to ensure outcomes are met within specified parameters and timelines.
  • Provide input and support in teaching excellence and skill development, in collaboration with the CTL team.
  • Maintain currency in the field of instructional design, educational technology, and pedagogical approaches.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • A minimum of a Master of Education or equivalent degree is required.
  • Certificate in Learning Experience Design and/or Instructional Design considered an asset.
  • A minimum of five years of related work experience with an educational academic environment including teaching and learning, eLearning, and instructional design.
  • Extensive experience with online teaching and learning practices.
  • High level of experience managing staff / team.
  • Experience facilitating training, workshops and coaching for faculty and course developers, providing leadership in an academic environment.
  • Extensive knowledge of pedagogy and science of learning principles.
  • Experience in instructional design and use of educational technology, specifically: Digital andragogy, Articulate Storyline, H5P, D2L Brightspace, and Microsoft 365 Suite.
  • Knowledge of institutional and ministry educational initiatives, instructional design issues, quality standards, online course standards, and college policies and procedures.
  • Comprehensive understanding of AODA, WCAG2.0, and copyright guidelines.
  • Experience with outcomes-based education, Universal Design for Learning, and adult learning principles.
  • Experience in development of instructional design, e-Learning strategies, and the delivery of face-to-face, hybrid, HyFlex, and online resource materials, and coaching faculty and course developers on these topics.
  • Experience in staff and managing professional relationships, demonstrated strong analytical, organizational, project management and decision-making skills.
  • Experience in learning and applying new educational technologies.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, verbal and written communications skills, and a proven ability to work well with clients and colleagues are essential.
